Case File 001; Audio

[Clears his throat. This is going to be a difficult post to make]

Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth speaking.

[The young man’s voice is clear, but stiff, with a harsh edge to it that hints at the anger bubbling underneath his skin. He represses this rage, attempting to remain composed and professional]

Earlier I received a tip from a confidential source- [Sorry Kay, he's not going to drag you out in the open, it’s too risky] - regarding a potential lead in the Lunatic case.

[A deep breath as he steels himself. This is a damning accusation to make and he knows it, and there’s no going back if he’s wrong]

Yuri Petrov, imPort advertising manager, has two files, with two different sets of abilities… and two different aliases. According to one, he’s been graced with an immunity to alcohol, but according to other? Pyrokinesis, with the ability to control and manipulate blue-green flames, specifically. Sound familiar? [A note of bitterness seeps into his tone, but he moves on quickly] And, if that’s not enough to convince you, there’s his alias, printed right on the file. Lunatic.

[A short pause follows, just enough to let the information sink in for any potential listeners.]

Unfortunately, my source only caught a mere glimpse of the files, but when I tried to confirm the discrepancy with Petrov, he was nowhere to be found. And, as much as I wish we had time to gather more information, we cannot afford to wait any longer for a response! If anyone listening has further information regarding Petrov, Lunatic, or their current whereabouts, I implore you to share anything and everything you know. With Lunatic on the move, it could mean the difference between life... and death.

[With that, he ends his little speech, and waits for a response from his fellow imPorts]

[OOC: And here’s the grand IC reveal! This post isn't strictly for conversations with Edgeworth. Feel free to talk to other characters, threadjack, and make IC plans here. Edit: And to clarify, this post takes place in the evening!]

[ Good. She's glad that this information is out. She's glad her suspicions were confirmed. And she's glad, too, that they were confirmed without anyone more having to be hurt.

She hopes.

Her voice is a little more subdued than usual. ]

We've got to take him out.

[ Kitty's voice remains quiet - not so much as a reaction to that harshness. ]

There've got to be imPorts with the ability to track, haven't there? With all the talents we've got, there's got to be someone.

[ Then, with just a bit of bitterness creeping in: ]

Looks like the government's not about to help.

Uh --

[He swallows, realizing he's started off on the wrong foot and it's awkward, so he starts over.]

Sorry, I... don't know anything about this. I've only been here a few weeks, and I've never heard of the guy. But I'd like to offer my strength, if there's anything I can do. I can identify people by scent, if I've met them before, and I can fight, so... you or anybody else, if you think you need more firepower, I'm there.

[No.

That's the first thought that runs through his head, and then runs on loop over and over and over. No no no no no no. It can't be. This can't be true. This can't be happening. Yuri was a judge, high-ranked in the Justice Department. (Maverick was the CEO) He's always tried to help them, even here. (And hadn't Maverick always seemed to have the best interests of the city, the Heroes, Barnaby at heart?) He couldn't be. He wouldn't have lied to all of them like this, for all this time. (Maverick did for a lot longer) Immediately, he pulls up the contact list on his communicator. Dials Yuri's number, again and again and again, for almost ten minutes straight. Actually yells out loud--why won't you answer, dammit?!

There's a notable shake in his voice when he finally does reply.]

Why...why should we believe your source? The last 'source' to leak files falsified a whole bunch of crap.

I don't. This is public, yeah? I expect someone will speak up.

[ And, pointedly: ]

And I'm guessing it was our imPort file your source saw, yeah? The one that we all got handed soon as we came out of the Porter?

[Will has a key to Yuri Petrov's place. He's had it for a while now, right after he had his business trip. The one Will didn't ask about, just went over to take care of the plants left behind. They've...had differences of opinion before. Big ones. But Will has plenty of conflict with people who aren't serial killers in hiding and when Miles says Sound familiar?—damn straight it does. Too familiar.

Freddie Lounds also had a source, after all.

Will rarely uses anything but text, but this isn't the usual, so it won't be treated as such.
]

A tip. From a confidential source. [So, so unimpressed over here. He does not at all sound the same as when he last talked to Edgeworth, that much is for damn certain.] No pictures. No evidence...just the word of a source who, by your admission, only caught a mere glimpse.

[Uh huh.]

What are we supposed to find enough to convince in this?

[Wherever Will is, a crow will be winging his way toward him. If there is a window in the way, the bird will tap against the glass with his beak.

And if Will takes a closer look at said crow, he will notice a small message container strapped to his leg. The message reads, in cramped handwriting:]

Can I come over? I can explain.

[...What. No. What?

It's Kay? Kay is the confidential source? He thought--hoped, if he's honest with himself, but he won't be right now--it was some shady, mysterious source that wouldn't be identified, much like with Freddie and her ~source~ for Tattlecrime. Not Kay. Not one of his own friends.

(But she had called herself the Thief of Truth, hadn't she?)

He's clenching the comm so tightly his knuckles are starting to go white, but he evens out his face mostly by the time he replies.]

How did you get to know about this? And how can you be sure it said all that from--from just a glimpse??

[Wild Tiger, huh. He could use this info, seeing as he was one of the imPorts who actively donned a costume and went around doing real actual superhero things. She could trust him with her identity and information.]

I was at the courthouse. I bumped into Judge Petrov along the way, and he accidentally dropped his things. While I tried to help him pick them up, I found his real file.

[Kotetsu swallows.]

Are you sure you read it right? Maybe it was a case file on Lunatic, or his personal notes or something. He's from our world, and all, and he's interested in that investigation as much as anybody. How long did you see it for?
infomodder: how can we hope to find anything on the ripper if u can't find me when i'm locked up??? (how can u not find me in prison jack)

[personal profile] infomodder 2015-01-28 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Don't worry, Miles. He's not seeking a name, he's not fishing for that. He's just pointing out the lack of anything concrete. At least, when Will Graham was locked up, he had a house littered with physical evidence to back it. This is...well, it's hearsay.

Which he's also intimately familiar with. He has seen how badly things go when people get one tiny morsel of what they think is the truth and run full speed ahead with it, don't stop to follow any real procedure, don't listen to anything but what they think is right. He has seen it in his own house, that does not need to repeat here in any capacity.
]

I do find it suspicious. [But, and here he speaks quicker. It's not rushed, but Will not biting into this immediately is not born out of him slacking] I also find it suspicious that Yuri Petrov's refusal to answer within your time frame is apparently all it takes for you to go dragging his name through mud, after which you implore us for information [Lunatic plays judge, jury, and executioner with the lives of those he's deemed to be sinners. Right here and now, it seems to Will that Miles Edgeworth is peachy keen to play judge, jury, and executioner with someone's reputation, and that's not comforting.] when you've come up very short.

[Don't go to a 100+ person potluck with a half dozen crappy Walmart cookies, that's rude.]

[Judging from the tone of her voice, it's clear that Kay is not making this up.]

I saw two files when his things fell. They were there in plain sight, and I tried to make sure I picked them up last so I could take more than one look at them.

Yeah.

[ She doesn't like this smug, snotty kid. He's got a jumped-up manner she doesn't like one bit, and an officiousness that reminds her of a magician. To say nothing of his eagerness to kiss up to the incompetents in their government. He's doing the right thing, coming out with this, sharing this information with everyone - she reminds herself of that, and so she doesn't get snappy. But his manner brings out a bit of aggression from her. She gets blusterier. ]

[Yeah, it is pretty weird, actually, and it bothered him at first, but it's a useful power.]

People each... nobody is the same, right? And everyone has their own scent, no matter how similar they are to someone else. I can smell stuff that doesn't have a scent to regular people, either, like light and darkness, and magic, that kind of stuff. I can see in the dark, too.

Because I can do one better than just fighting him. I can stop him using his powers.

[ There's a grim satisfaction in her tone. No question that she knows just how vital that is. ]

Meaning no one gets hurt. No casualties. Including him. Because you know someone that mad would burn himself to death before being arrested if we gave him the chance.
