♡ VIDEO [001]
[The camera blips to life to show a blonde, bun-haired girl's beaming face. She appears to be in her bedroom, seating at her desk with her bed in the background. Her room is tidy and decorated with cute accents. A stuffed animal on her bed; a string of star-shaped lights hung on the wall; pale purple curtains on the window barely appearing in frame; any sort of touch she could bring to the room that made it feel less cookie-cutter. Government housing was pretty bland in appearance, she was clearly doing her best to make the room assigned to her feel like it was hers.]
So! Valentine's Day is coming up!
[She cocks her head a little, thoughtful.]
Back home, that's the day when girls would give chocolates to the boys they like or like-like... Then, on White Day, the boys are supposed to give gifts back in return!
[She's all smiles.]
But apparently here, it's all mashed into one day? I think that's really wonderful! No month long wait to see if the guy you like, likes you back! I mean, not that I've dealt with that personally... but I know people who have!
[She shakes her head a bit. Don't fumble! With a soft clap of her hands together, she looks directly into the camera with a bright smile.]
I just think this is all really sweet and I hope you all have a nice Valentine's day this weekend!
[[Note: her comm tag reads "Usagi Tsukino," no mention of Sailor Moon.]]

no probably not it'll be fine ]
Still, it's probably an idea shared across a few different Japans, this tradition you're talking about. It's not how things have been described here about this holiday.
Out of curiosity... do you know anyone named Minako?

It's like… the holiday is what makes the chocolates or flowers or whatever gifts extra meaningful! It's not just the gifts on their own. Not to say any gift is less meaningful on another day of the year!
[Usagi paused a moment, collecting her thoughts. She twirled a longer strand of hair around her finger absent-mindedly, a slight frown on her face.]
Maybe it's more complicated to explain than I thought...

Still, it's weird to just pick some random day to just give people stuff. Isn't Snoggletog enough for that?

If I had to guess, it's because chocolate is sweet! Sweet like how love makes you feel!
And back home, if you really liked someone, you would personally make chocolates to give them. So it wasn't only sweet, but it shows that you care about them enough to put in the time and effort to make something for them!

And you want to hear something amusing? The last time Valentine's Day rolled around at school, I had no idea what was going on. Aoko had to explain it to me, because the two years before, I hadn't been able to go to school on February 14th.

[At least as far as he's concerned, but then...he had a lot of admirers back home, so splitting up the focus actually provided a really welcome breath of fresh air.]
The girls where I'm from seemed to really like it, anyway. And besides, sometimes guys like taking time to plan what they're gonna give back, you know? Rather than winging it in some mall and grabbing off the shelf a random gift that doesn't even correlate at all with what the other person got you.
It's a lot more personal having the two days. A lot more romantic.

Because there is only one day, people mutually get gifts for one another!
Not that I dislike Valentine's and White Day. But like... it means both people are thinking of one another at the same time and wanting to get each other a token of their affection. I think the mutual thoughtfulness is really sweet!
no subject
Just because there's only one day doesn't mean everybody's going to receive mutual gifts, though. There's bound to be people who give something to someone and don't get anything in return.
[For example, because their wallet was stolen and they're broke so now they can't get anything for friends much less anybody else.]
I do like the spontaneity, though! ...and any holiday with sweets is pretty okay by me on principle.
