It's been a while, but I suppose I'm curious—and it's hard to do much for curiosity, once it's born, is there? Some feelings can't be snuffed out, once they exist, no matter how much you might wish for it.

[ The voice is that of a young woman, somewhere between late teens and early twenties, lower-middle pitch and a steady cadence. A little tired, perhaps a little bored, but not irritably so. ]

Darkness, Earth, Water, Light, Wind, or Flame.

Choose one, please. But, before you do, know that there's no right answer, or wrong answer, and there's no moral component to any of them. "Light" doesn't mean good; "darkness" doesn't mean evil. Only whichever suits you. Something a little trivial, perhaps, but I'd like to hear your answers.

It's not really all that great, either.

Why do you think so?

Because that's been my life for thousands of years. It's not a relief, it's hell.

While it can seem long, my life will be very, very short. Shorter than that of most humans, even. For me, at least, it's each passing change that is more likely to drive me into hell, than the absence of them. I'm not designed to endure that sort of thing.

But that's a little heavy, isn't it? I only asked this to pass the time. That's all.

Time passes no matter what we talk about, doesn't it? I don't care.

['I don't mind' is more in line with what Lapis is feeling, but she still hasn't quite grasped the nuances of conversation. gems were more to the point with each other.]

Do you have a constant you want to keep returning to? Or do you just want things to stop?

I'm an imPort. Death wouldn't stick, anyway.

I didn't mean it like that. There are worse things than death, anyway.

Oh, I'm well aware of that. It's only that when most say "stop," it's death they refer to. Nothing else is so static, and so forth.

But between the two, I can't say either much appeals to me. There's no "constant" to return to, but wanting to "stop" implies there's comfort I can find in the time that is paused, and I couldn't say that's true.

Then what do you want?

Nothing.

You won't get it.

No. I suppose closer to the truth isn't, "I want nothing," but rather: "I don't want anything."

It's the void of desire, rather than the desire for some void.

Does that make more sense?

Not really. You still have preferences, don't you? You just said you wanted people's answers rather than making them up, and that you didn't like when things changed.

Those aren't things that will matter by the time tomorrow comes.

Do you change your mind that quickly?

I don't mean it that way. Rather: this is just a way to pass the time, after all. How any of these choices play out, or how these conversations go, regardless of whether they suit my temporary comforts, won't have any meaning tomorrow. I'll be killing time with other methods then.

That sounds kind of desperate to me.

Desperate implies an active expenditure of energy. I don't have much strength for a fury like desperation.

Desperation is quiet. It only spurs you into action when it's about to break you.

There's nothing to break.

There's always something to break.

Not for me. Not anymore.

That point doesn't exist for anyone, no matter how short your life is. It's wishful thinking.

Wishful thinking for me would be allowing myself to believe you.

Only if you like disappointment.
