hope can be such a fickle thing

ive lived my life without it for years and it chooses now of all times to barrel its way back in
but none of that makes it fit in the environment
its only like an ice cube trying to enjoy a summers day

even when im staring at it in front of me i cant seem to conquer the idea that it isnt mine
that im not the one who gets a happy ending its only being borrowed from someone else
another me from another timeline who things progressed more happily for
another me who could look at this and actually feel like shes earned it

i dont know what to do with this feeling
except to know its made a fool of me

ive been aware of certain lords of time before
its a somewhat loaded phrase
but boring bureaucrats are generally preferable to omnidestructive demons

At least, to most Time Lords. You never can tell with regeneration, people have turned out blue sometimes.

sorry its just that ive been living on one earth or another for over four years now
and for many of the other aliens ive encountered there were no marked physical differences even without lachesis intervening on the matter
none of which is of course your fault
it just makes one feel as though she needs to be more obviously alien to ensure the banner is being upheld

Well I can understand why that might happen. Tall enough to reach the top shelf, opposable thumbs, the ability to adapt to changing environments, legs for running, evolutionary speaking, this design is a pretty good design.

Still, I understand! It's terribly awkward when you're the representative for your entire species.

at the same time i feel like its almost inevitable in a situation like ours
the only exception thats even conceivable is that lachesis would decide to bring in other members of our species
but she could always have chosen a more natively diverse planet instead
somewhere with a more intergalactic awareness

I think she's prejudiced. Either that, or she finds humans endearing—like a colony of ants.

im not sure that endearment is quite the prevailing emotion when one is holding a magnifying glass to them on an especially sunny day

I'm willing to bet though that there are moments equivalent to shaking up the ant colony just to see what happens.

my time here has opened me to all possibilities already
perhaps a little more so than i was a few days before
well except for those that include lachesis letting us go home because we ask nicely
those people are just naive

It's always such a pity when asking nicely doesn't work. That's usually my first plan of attack.

every new arrival tries proposing it as if its some revolutionary new idea thats the surest way for us to be sent home
but not a one of them has ever managed it
