There are a great many heroic types among the imPort population, and this is probably a rather tired question, but indulge my curiosity if you would.

What is it the elevates a person from simply well-intentioned, to someone worthy of such a distinguished title?

Deeds? Bravery? Strength? Capability? Righteousness? Nobility? All of the above, or some combination thereof?

Or is it simply that there's one person in the world that believes it?

Yes, even in 2013 before the world was distracted by much larger problems, it had gained a considerable amount of traction, and was only a matter of time before those laws were overwritten. By 2025, there were snide remarks and idle debates now and then of course, but certainly no pitchforks.

[The thought of carving out any sort of life that doesn't involve Maria feels just as daunting as suddenly waking up one morning without any teeth. If he dwells on it too deeply, it leaves him empty and directionless, to the point where getting up out of bed occasionally feels like a herculean task.

But Joaquin goes for a jog almost every morning, and he always makes a point of treating Manolo to a fresh smoothie he grabbed from one of the local shops. Manolo, in turn, sends him off to work with a thermos of hot tea, and that daily routine alone means more to him than his friend probably realizes.

But Hermann has no way of knowing that, so Manolo easily accepts the well-wishes, thankful that no one can actually see the look on his face. As it is, he's starting to get the feeling that Joaquin's friendly acquaintance is ready to end the conversation. Not that he blames him -- they've gotten a bit off track from the original question.]

Difficult to say. Either outcome suits me at the moment. I have considerable work to do in both worlds.

in this world?

I have a great many projects. One of which is examining this world's oceans, while another is deciphering the differences of the physical laws of this world in comparison to those in mine.

My favorite? Well, I'm rewriting some programming code for a model Jaeger.

Essentially, I'll be enabling a robot to respond to some simple wireless commands.

[Since his knowledge of robots is so limited, he's actually curious to know about whatever Hermann is working on. The only experience Manolo has with anything like that are the terrifying animatronics that attacked him and Jaime at the haunted house. It was pretty funny, in hindsight, albeit embarrassing since the moment has been immortalized in pictures.]
