Human nature. Has its good sides and its bad sides, but they aren't even. Because good and bad people alike always pretend like they're innocent. People seize upon weakness to drag out skeletons that have been hidden under the porch, but sometimes they were already buried.

[ He sneers. ]

I hope whoever tried to call the law on me without evidence remembers that every story has two sides. My record's clean and so are my hands.

Do you? At least that kept you useful, right?

That was hardly personal, Harvey. [ maybe true, maybe not. ] I was performing a function. And I did attempt to be civil with you.

You attempted to "fix" me. Don't expect me to appreciate that, too.

I attempted to help you. And understand you. Though my success on either of those fronts is highly arguable.

If you can't understand me, trying isn't going to change anything. It is or it isn't. I know I've made myself clear enough.

Generally. I was never looking to be convinced by you anymore than you were by me.

Would it have mattered if you convinced me of anything? My own opinion seems somewhat irrelevant to you.

It always matters. The only reason anyone calls me crazy is because they won't be convinced. Standing alone can't accomplish half of what standing together can. Sometimes.

I was unaware that you had any desire to stand together with anyone, Harvey, let alone myself.

I don't think I work well with others. Well-- not for very long. [ A pause. ] That sort of thing is never built to last, anyway.
