Have you ever had those days when you've had to empty out your savings to relocate friends whose lives are in active danger?

[ She finally looks at the camera directly, as Ashiah can be seen bumbling across the wall behind her. ] I think it's time to admit I need a new weapon. The Porter recently took the one I've relied upon for years, and this [ She brings her hand up, holding a large knife. ] has proven a feeble replacement. I'd prefer something with more weight and reach, something that can actually deal damage. Motorized, if possible.

So, I'm open to suggestions. If you craft any yourself, sell me on your product. I'm willing to learn something new, but no firearms. They don't agree with my style.

Third birthday. You're referring to your original, before translating it to the Gregorian calendar.

I no longer have my notes, but I believe Tavros mentioned your calendar is quite different. I helped him pick his new birthday. [ His tone is soft; Tavros was much easier to deal with than Kanaya. He misses the other trolls sometimes. ]

[ She nods along, almost enthusiastically. ]

Our solar system had a real sun, not like the infant that Earth orbits! We had much hotter days, and it took over twice as long to complete one sweep.

Once my next one rolls around, I'll only be nine.

[ His mouth twitches a bit at the implication that the Earth doesn't have a real sun, but he lets it slide. ]

Sweep, yes, I remember. Equivalent to two Earth years. When will your next be?

[ Face it, Julian, this sun is weaksauce. ]

2.16 years, to be precise. Which doesn't even get into the smaller divisions within those sweeps, or the differences in our seasons, with two moons. We're about three quarters of the way through, since my last.

You'd have liked that one. It was in September, just as you'd have wanted it.

I would have liked that, yes.

[ He quickly does the math, finding the approximate, based on what Kanaya's told him. ]

Your next is in late November?

Very good. [ She'd given him enough to figure it out, and he worked it all out. She can't really be surprised. ]

I suppose it can't be helped. What do trolls do to celebrate?

Not a terrible lot. Karkat used to use the occasion to lament on his insufficiencies, because he's Karkat.

For me, I suppose my wriggling day hasn't been important enough to celebrate. I simply observe the date as a means of continuing what I can of my culture.

That does sound like Karkat.

Anniversaries, birthdays, holidays -- these dates make culture. [ though Julian might mean that a little more literally than most people would. ] It would be good to do something for it.

[ Kanaya knows all too well exactly what he's saying, even if he isn't quite saying it. ]

I think, it's more that culture makes them. These dates are not the foundations, they are markers, reminders. The holidays exist for us to reflect on that culture, and remember where we came from.

I don't know if I have a way to really do that without making it a very private affair.

The culture creates them. Then the dates feed back into it. The dates grow into something more than they once were.

[ But she'll probably never convince him otherwise. ]

Because only you remain among the trolls?

Well, yes. I'm the only one to whom that culture is relevant anymore. The date, on its own, means nothing. Only to me does it have any further significance.
