Quick question, everyone. I know things have been crazy lately and it's probably the last thing anyone wants to think about, but I hope you don't mind if I use the network for a kind of survey. I'm working on a project with a friend and I'd love some kind of feedback from the people we'd hope to be helping with our work.

[She takes a sip from a pretty looking coffee cup and smiles.]

What do you think of independent businesses without any kind of affiliation with the military? Would you be inclined to support them or think they're a misguided venture?

On what grounds would they be a misguided venture?

Given the perks you get for being registered, I guess I'm a little concerned about what the military might think about people going it alone.

No one's shown up at my door yet, as far as I know. Nor can I confirm that anyone has bugged my phones or my office.

[And that, he would know. Unless they are so good he can't tell, and that rarely happens.]

[Eesh, bugging her office is one experience she would really not like to have to go through again.]

I made the mistake of being too relaxed about checking for bugs before and it cost me dearly, I certainly hope history won't be about to repeat itself this time around.

How long have you been going it alone for?

A month, give or take a week or so. So not long enough to give you any kind of solid data on what's going to happen, I'm afraid. But I haven't caught any kind of suspicious lurkers or receiving menacing notices yet.

Personally, my inclination to support a business is reliant upon its function, not its affiliation. That said, true growth is dependent upon independent ventures, so I would not be averse to supporting such businesses.

That's encouraging to hear. I'm hoping a lot of people will feel similarly, but I guess I'm still finding my feet in a society where the military are where the buck stops, so to speak.

Perhaps market your business to as large an audience as you can, that way it will be more likely to survive long term without interference from parties who feel they will not benefit at all from its existence.

That's a good question, Miss Mia! I need to carefully consider these things before I start the Florida branch of our agency.

Really? Are you and Daddy going to start up your law office again?

That's the plan, kiddo. Your dad and I have been talking about starting up again, and I know for sure I miss being an attorney. I didn't get to do half the things I wanted with my career before I had to quit.

Oh, that's great! I know Daddy's been looking forward to being a lawyer again.

And if you need anyone to manage the talent side of things, look no further!

So do a lot of these businesses have to get permission from the military to set up? Or just the ones run by imPorts?

I say; go for it! It's there's a niche that needs filling, and you can fill it, why... no reason not to take advantage of that. That is, if you don't mind losing the government's cushion.

It'll make it harder to get set up without the government backing, but I can't really say their line of thinking coincides with my code of ethics. I'd sooner work harder for what I believe in than sacrifice my integrity for a little extra money.

Hm. Is that so? So, what kinds of ethics does this government have? I just arrived here recently, and I'm very curious!

Well, that's just called Capitalism. It's generally a good thing.

I have a feeling I'll not be raking in enough money to call myself a Capitalist, all things considered.

Whether or not you make a lot of money doesn't matter, the heart of the issue is whether or not we should encourage a free market, instead of just a government run one.

It's a good thing, if you ask me.

In that case then I guess I am. Before I came here I'd been my own boss for about three years, it's weird having to be someone's assistant here, especially in something other than my chosen profession.

Stark, and yes, you could say that.

Or really, more accurately, I'm a businessman.

That depends. What kind of project are you working on?

My old partner and I are hoping to set up a law practice here. We've been out for a while and it's high time we got back into a courtroom in my book.

That sounds great! I'd definitely support it.

I hope supporting our business doesn't mean you're planning to get yourself arrested on a regular basis.

I don't see any harm in that. We could use a little variety.

It doesn't have to be unique. Just useful.

I think a better question is why it would matter. We're not supposed to need them, or be dependent on them.

If people don't support the business, that's their problem. But thankfully, there aren't any registration versus unregistered sentiments here. [Yet. She always thinks of the yet.]

I guess that side of it was really what concerned me the most. I mean, it's not like we're living under the thumb of a military dictatorship but... well I wouldn't put anything past people who control the sort of technology these guys do.

Right now, they're pretty insistent on looking good. If we don't go along with their government, then it's pretty obvious what we miss out on. But it's not like they'll cut the power and make all the food in our mini-fridges go bad.
