does anyone know how to deregister?

I don't mean I want to turn vigilante, or go the other way. And I don't want to go AWOL. I know about those. I just made a mistake, I know that now. I made a mistake and I want to undo it.

there has to be a form to fill out. something.

Please. Anything could help.

We've been told the only thing I'm sure they think matters.

Should we perish in this world, the nanites are responsible for our resurrection.

[For that reason, Yuri is both displeased by and grateful for their presence.]

Why ever would they remove the very thing that helps them determine which of us is an imPort and which is not? The nanites produce our tattoos and tell the government if we are registered, unsettled, criminals, vigilantes, or AWOL.

They won't remove them. Not even if you ask them nicely. And removing them yourself...if that was so easily done, I think the vast majority of us would have already seen to it, don't you?

As for finding out more...I would advise speaking with any of the imPort scientists that have been brought through the Porter. I'm certain they would have looked into nanite technology and it's possible they've made discoveries that haven't become common knowledge. I would imagine that they're also likely to be more forthcoming with information than the government.

The extent of the abilities that have been granted to ordinary people appears to be quite limited, whereas imPort powers are vast beyond imagining. Doubtful we will be allowed out from underneath the government's thumb so easily. It would be convenient for us, not them.

As for the nanites, I suspect those in charge will refrain from implanting them in anyone who is native to this world. After all, I don't think it would be conducive or well-received to monitor them using the same system that monitors us, not without a means in place to effectively separate one group from the other.

Tell me, do you always do as you're told by your kidnappers?

More than likely, yes. Regardless of the powers we carry into this world or receive upon our arrival, we will always be imPorts. We do not belong to this world, and that distinction is one I suspect our abductors will cling to no matter the duration of our stay.

And it is to them I was referring when I mentioned kidnappers, although I suppose you could argue in their defense given that they claim our being brought here isn't by their design.

In any case, what I meant by the statement was that you mustn't always obey orders, particularly those given by strangers. They might not be in your best interest. Use discretion and decide for yourself. As we all do.

There are pros and cons to conformity. Having lived such a life myself for a time, I would not recommend attempting to fit in purely for the sake of it. Most do not find happiness that way.

[Not that he was seeking happiness by doing so, but that's another story for another time.]

With regards to our being brought here, however...I believe we know a version of the truth, and that is all I can truly say. I doubt bringing dangerous persons here and jeopardizing their own population was intended by the government, but we're also limited by them in how much we can investigate the Porter with hopes of discovering a way to return to where we came from.

I believe there's much we're not being told, accident or no.

[And then there's Lachesis to consider...]

I've been here for nearly two years.

[In between which there was a period of roughly nine months where he had been exPorted.]

And I suspect our situation as imPorts being accidental or deliberate has very little to do with whether the government is selective in what information they release to us.
