No, more than that. Pretend it's someone you love's last New Years Eve. This'll be the last time they count down with the ball. Then they'll have their last bank holidays, their last birthday, last Halloween. Maybe they get another Christmas, but probably not. Maybe you should call this one the last, just to be safe.


[ As she speaks, the distending fruit splits up one rotting side, collapsing under its own weight. Remarkably blood-like juice runs down her hand and wrist. ]


How's your resolution now? Does it mean a fucking thing?


[ The flesh of the fruit itself is sloughing off now in disgusting clumps that splatter noisily on the unseen floor. ]

[This is one of the more straight to the point, if a bit dramatic, posts she's seen in a bit. (And Persephone's not actually wrong here, really. At least how Wanda sees it.) The fruit is an interesting touch, too.

Wanda grew up around a lot of death. Sokovia was -- is -- (as most of it still exists in her world) -- a country that had two states of being: War that was very actively going on, and war that was slightly-less-actively going on. None of those states of being involve a time of actual, real peace. She hadn't celebrated any holidays back home for years; she stopped giving a fuck after her parents died, even less of one after her brother had too. Living in Sokovia, and then entirely family-less in upstate New York, had still felt ... precarious. But then she wound up here almost a year ago and got sort of reunited with some versions of family (alternate universes are cool but complicated) and started to find more reasons to celebrate some things again with them. However, she still carries many of those same feelings she had back home with her now despite that; that feeling of precariousness still shows itself.]

Yeah see this is how I have twenty-seven reasons why I've never made resolutions since this sums up all of them. [Twenty-seven as in twenty-seven years, as in how old she is now, meaning her entire life's situation is the reason why she never has.]

I think you'll find the inane bullshit people resolve to lose themselves in like diets and gym buddies and reading more books and less internet articles stem entirely from attempting to push away even the thought of their own mortality. If anything, the reminder of someone close to them on the verge of death just entrenches people further in the idea of fresh beginnings and self improvement.
