Soooooooo hypothetical question for y'all

What are your thoughts on secret identities??

I mean, we're all pretty recognizable here just because we're imPorts, yeah? If you don't really have the whole 'mild-mannered civilian' thing going for you anymore, and everyone knows that you have powers because of the imPort thing, is it worth the trouble to keep your secret identity and your regular joe identity separate?

Back home, secret identities weren't ever necessary. Everyone knew who the Rescue Team members were, and it didn't cause problems often. But thinking back on it, being out in the open helped more than it hurt. I wouldn't do things differently if I had the chance.

And here, I'm the only one of my species that got Ported in, so... I can't really do a secret identity.

Aw, I'm glad you've never had any trouble with it!

I'm not like 100% sure about this, since it isn't my area? But I think there's a support group for non-humanoid imPorts around here, and the guys at the Porter might be able to hook you up with a holographic projector or something, if looking human for a bit would be something that you're interested in.

There were only three, possibly four people in my world with 'powers' akin the ones people have here. Only one confirmed to be alive at the end of WWII. So frankly, coming from just after the war, I have little frame of reference for the idea. I know that General Faustova, the one person with powers confirmed to still be alive in my world, kept it a secret for a while because no one would have believed her and she wanted it to be a surprise she could spring on the Germans in the midst of combat.

Here, though, it's very different. We don't really have the ability to hide our powers. If someone is an imPort, everyone can tell and everyone knows you have powers. So mild-mannered civilian - or mild-mannered General, in my world's case - are not really options. Even if you put on a mask and a costume, eventually someone would connect your powers to the powers of the person they saw in the mask.

And then they would simply be hurt that you lied to them and it would ultimately do more harm than good.

Hypothetically, it's important.

I hypothetically know a guy who had a secret identity. He saved the city, did a lot of superhero kind of stuff. This guy became obsessed with him and wanted to kill him. It was a serious case of the Single White Female plotline: admired him, but wanted to be him, so murder's apparently always the answer. Anyway, because he had a secret identity, the guy who was obsessed with him couldn't hurt the people he cared about.
