Before I start, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mitsuru Kirijo and, as the rest of this message will doubtless betray soon enough, I have only recently arrived. I apologise in advance if any of this seems overly blunt or harsh. This isn't like any situation I'm accustomed to so I ask that you forgive any breach of personal or local etiquette and trust that it isn't intentional on my part.

That being said, I do have some questions concerning our job assignments - not the job we were brought here for, I understand that, but the employment we are granted in order that we are able to support ourselves financially. While I don't wish to seem ungrateful, I'm not certain I'm entirely cut out for the role I have been assigned to and, truthfully speaking, I have to question how it is they determine who is given what job. Is it entirely random? Or are we supposed to consider it a challenge to test our adaptability?

And following on from that, how would those who have already done so advise that I go about seeking employment I feel I am more suited to? I am happy to expand on my skillset should the need arise but I feel that is perhaps better suited for private conversation where it holds relevance.

They probably aren't completely random. I got stuck with a teaching job, and so have the other people like me. We're not suited for it either.

One of us quit and switched professions, and I'm considering doing the same. Adaptability is one thing, but we were trained for something and there's no reason not to do it.

I see. If not random, then, I did wonder if it was perhaps a well-meaning attempt to place those who may not be able to resume their old jobs while they are here. But if you say there is no reason not to do what you were trained for then it seems we are no closer to a solution as to the logic behind it all.

I'm not sure they know what to do with people who haven't lived on planets like Earth before. There's no good equivalent here for what some of us are.

Generally speaking, they try to assign jobs that are close to your home profession, or a mockery of something in your background. There is no in between. Thankfully, there's nothing saying you have to stay there, and it's pretty easy for imPorts to job hunt.

If you're up for registering, the government stipend is enough to live off of until you decide what you want to do. $75 doesn't sound like much, but it goes far in this world's economy.

The job assignments tend to be pretty hit-or-miss. They either match you with something that works pretty well or goes down in flames pretty quickly. The good news is that you're free to quit if you want.

If you want to look for a new job, I'd suggest checking out your local newspaper. There's usually a section inside listing available positions within your area. Otherwise, you might try offering your skill set on the network and see who bites. There's a lot of imPorts around who run their own businesses.

I am, yes. I suppose it's not so surprising that you would pick up on that.

If you dislike your job, you can simply quit and find something else that would suit you. The government gives everyone a suggestion of their job, but it's not something you have to stick with.

That seems to be what I'll be busying myself with in the near future. Though I do wonder what the point is in assigning us work if they don't take the trouble to assign something that's actually suited to our skills.
