Have you ever fallen in love? Have you ever been punched very hard in the face, or perhaps attacked by a pack of starving wolves? For those of you who've done both, would you say the experiences were at all comparable?

Yeah, the only falls I can think of that people look forward to are more like jumps.

[Absent-mindedly, she rubs her nose where she was punched. It doesn't hurt (physically; she still feels like an ass) now, and there's no sign of it, but the memory still stings.]

If anything I'd say the punching pain's more in line with when you realize it wouldn't work with whoever it is you love.

And why do you think that is?

They're both sharp things that ruin your day and that you weren't able to protect yourself from.

[ He laughs, bitter but sincerely amused. ]

Do you still miss them?

[She's pretty sure she knows which one he's asking about, and her joking tone says that too, but still:] The punches in the face, or the lost loves?

Whichever one makes the better answer. I have all night.

Well, I imagine only a masochist would miss being punched in the face. As for the lost loves - I'm long over them. The one I still keep in contact with is very happy with someone else and frankly we're far less of a disaster as friends than we were as lovers, so it worked out for the best.

[ teasing: ] I never relish giving criticism, but your happy ending makes for a terribly boring tale.

[Chloe laughs.] Right, when I quit my dayjob it won't be for some form of storytelling. Besides, I don't want to dish on all of it when the one I'm in contact with is here and from a lot closer to the disaster than me.

Oh no. [ The plot thickens again! ] So you have the emotional distance, but perhaps...

Perhaps not: Looks like they're already on the way to being happy with the someone else.

[Thoughtful:] They were very apologetic about it, which was sweet, but when I come from, unnecessary.
