Hey all. Quick PSA:

Over at StarkTech there's a team of us that are working on a solution to some of the weird ~memory shenanigans~ that you might have seen around lately. We're no closer to a cure, but I'm pretty sure we HAVE now successfully got a working prototype for a "vaccine" of sorts. Basically we've figured out how to upgrade the imPort nanites to protect anyone else from getting false memories implanted in their head and believing that they're real.

If you want to swing by StarkTech any time this week, we'll be happy to fix you up. Free lollipop for people who come in, and it doesn't take any time at all. You can pop in over a lunch break.

The project's being headed by Jemma Simmons, Hiro Hamada, and me-- hi, I'm Skye, if we haven't met before. We'll be rotating different shifts, so you might not see all of us, but one of us will be around.

It's basically a nanite upgrade. We give them a new program to let them learn what your own brain patterns look like, so they can differentiate between "yours" and "not yours." Then if your brain encounters memories that aren't yours, hypothetically the nanites should stop any potential confusion or transplanting of false memories by telling the brain that they're not yours.

Couldn't that create complications for telepaths?

If by that you mean "couldn't that stop telepaths from implanting false memories into other imPorts" then I've gotta say, I'm kinda not seeing the downside here.

[ ok Steve Rogers. Privately, Natasha smiles at that: it's doggedly moral in ways that Natasha hasn't been for most of her life. There's a time and a place for every extreme measure. But it would be patronizing to point out, and only hamper her line of questioning.

Besides. Her own experiences with questionable memories leads her to agree, on a personal level, if not a pragmatic one. ]

I was thinking more along the lines of whether or not it'd block them from reading others' thoughts, given that it would introduce brain patterns that could be flagged as foreign into their minds.

It shouldn't actually interfere with the reception or transfer of memories in any way, afaik?? I thought doing that was getting into territory with too many variables. Simpler is better and all that.

All it does is stop the brain from recognizing memories that aren't yours as yours. So you'd still be able to see a false memory, if you got one. You'd just know it was false.

Are you kidding? Someone around here has to deflate his ego on a bi-weekly basis to stop his head from growing too big to fit through the door, and isn't going to be Simmons.

That'd be a no and a yes, then. I guess I don't have to ask what you make of him.

NOPE. I am actually legitimately being paid here to make smart remarks at Tony Stark's face all day.

(Okay I lied that's not really in my job description.)

(But I get away with it anyway. BEST JOB EVER.)

Made any progress with the excruciating narcissism?

It's a work in progress.

I like to think I'm doing my part, though. Fighting the good fight, etc.

How are you delivering the upgrade? I doubt you can just plug a jump drive into us anywhere. Is it some kind of injection, or a wireless connection with the nanites?

injection. basically it goes into the bloodstream and interfaces with your nanites that way.

Getting more information doesn't necessarily equate nerves. But that does cover all my questions.

well. okay, true. but it usually doesn't hurt.

[ bless his heart, he has no idea. but it's sweet, barring any knowledge of who she is and how used to it hurting she is. ]

Anyone with a real discomfort is more likely to avoid the procedure entirely, regardless of whether or not you tell them it doesn't hurt. But it's a sweet thought.
