Hey all. Quick PSA:

Over at StarkTech there's a team of us that are working on a solution to some of the weird ~memory shenanigans~ that you might have seen around lately. We're no closer to a cure, but I'm pretty sure we HAVE now successfully got a working prototype for a "vaccine" of sorts. Basically we've figured out how to upgrade the imPort nanites to protect anyone else from getting false memories implanted in their head and believing that they're real.

If you want to swing by StarkTech any time this week, we'll be happy to fix you up. Free lollipop for people who come in, and it doesn't take any time at all. You can pop in over a lunch break.

The project's being headed by Jemma Simmons, Hiro Hamada, and me-- hi, I'm Skye, if we haven't met before. We'll be rotating different shifts, so you might not see all of us, but one of us will be around.

Thank you for taking the time and resources to develop something like this. I do have a question, though.

When you say it's supposed to protect anyone else from getting false memories implanted, do you think there's a chance it would hold up against an imPort with the ability to tamper with them?

Hm. That's a good question. I'm not sure. Obviously it's kind of hard to test, since you'd have to ... have someone willing to submit themselves as a test subject, and a telepath you trust on board.

what skye said. basically it runs keys up your own memories as interference in the background. subconsciously i mean. you're not gonna get flashbacks or anything. i dunno if that'll ward off telepaths or not.

So you are saying that all the people acting admittedly strange and erratical is the work of some sort of velikaia implanting memories into people?

And you can somehow protect us from this without messing any with our memories yourself. Are you certain? Far be it from me to exercise undue sceptisism, but I have heard some rather nasty stories about what happens when things like this go wrong.

I don't know exactly what's doing it, but whatever the case may be, people are definitely acting as if they recall memories that don't belong to them.

The solution we came up with doesn't mess with the brain in any way, so it shouldn't interfere with your memories. It interfaces with the nanites.

That's a good idea. Fake memories can be pretty dangerous with the wrong sorts of people.

How does it work? Are you actually changing our nanites in some way? Are there other ways to change them? Are you looking into this?

Simmons knows the biology behind it, I just do the programming. My basic understanding of how it works is that we're not so much changing them as we are updating the software. Like when you get a vaccination, right? You're basically teaching your immune system what that virus is all about, so it records it for future reference and knows exactly what to do if it ever encounters it again.

It's sort of like that. We're upgrading the nanites with new programming so that they key themselves to your own brain patterns. So, if you come into contact with a foreign brain pattern, the nanites will recognize it, and tell your brain to reject those memories as not being yours. Does... that make sense?

Someone or something has been causing people to remember things that never happened to them. Creepy, huh?

[ Bad joke, but there is no good joke about this, is there? He still barely believes it's going on, but like hell he wants to risk becoming a pod person. He's been needing to reconnect (grudgingly) with Skye, anyway. ]

We're working on it. The nanites are in the blood, and they're the key to our solution, so injection is just easiest. But I think Simmons is working on a pill.

What's your success rate? "Pretty sure" isn't exactly reassuring.

[ He's not a fan of even more things being put in his bloodstream, for certain, but considering they're already there... ]

Are there any known side effects?

I've tested it on myself and I haven't had any side effects so far, but I know that's not saying much. That's why we need a larger pool.

The vaccine worked in all the simulations we ran, but short of actually getting someone to tamper with our own memories on purpose, I can't guarantee a 100% success rate.

Well it's not... technically a vaccine in the strictest sense of the word. More like a nanite upgrade. But that was the quickest way I could think of to describe it at the time.
