[ It's dark -- mostly because it's late, but there aren't an excess of lights on, either -- though Reggie's face is faintly illuminated by the light of his communicator screen and also something off-screen that might be a TV or bedside light. Either way, he's recognizable enough, and though he's smirking faintly his expression is otherwise somewhat blank.

He's been staying out of most of the current drama as best as any survival-oriented, cowardly narcissist can, which is pretty damn well. All things considered. Basically he hasn't been leaving the house if he can avoid it, for which has his reasons. ]

So, all right. Hear me out. Anyone else ever noticed how once you're here, you have to just start believin' in everything? Like that any kinda crap is possible and you just gotta get used to it... after a while you don't even have to think about it anymore. [ Which is, you know, nice. In his opinion. ] Nice thing about that is not having to worry so much about whatever happens, I think. No matter how bad things have gotten here, it's never been the end of the world.

... Well, not yet. [ And his brow crinkles at that, but only briefly. ] Kinda makes you think, huh? Like what's the best way to take advantage of being stuck in some world that actually takes okay care of us? Don't even bother arguing with me about that part, it's true and everyone oughta know it. We get a lot of free, fake time to kill being here, so I say it should be obvious: we can do whatever we can't do back where we came from. Anyway, what I actually wanna know is--

well is there a difference between traveling and REALLY traveling

Yeah. Going to a place because you've got something you've got to do there, versus going there to immerse yourself in living there. Going there to understand, rather than treating a journey as an accomplishment, something to mark off your list.

Ive studied a broad or two but Ive never lived there, u got me

not like Id rule it out, but its never exactly been a priority of mine either. I figure Ill end up where I end up

2. There are lots of really lovely places you can end up because you choose to go there. If you don't take control over your choices, you won't have a life you made for yourself; you'll have an accidental life.

Im open to the possibility of an accidental life. Im 17, I dont want to plan my whole life out YET. thats pretty much what we're all living right now, anyway

I know people who've changed the world before they were 17 by making the right choices.

I'm not one of those kind of people, thank goodness. Id rather just do whats right for me

too much responsibility otherwise. I'd hate to be the guy whose fault it was if something goes bad

So it's better to let things be bad than try to improve them just because you might not succeed?

Oh, yeah, SO much better to die with the last thought in your head being, 'Oh, but what if...?' No, thank you VERY much! I've been eye-to-eye with death more than once myself, and I can tell you that you feel FAR better about it if you gave it your all than if you just sat down quietly and tried not to be noticed. And if you're worried about legacy...How many people have you heard of who never succeeded OR failed? Not one, that's certain.

look, I dont CARE. I dont care about them. I dont care about what happens to anyone else. the only way I'll feel better is by avoiding all that crap altogether. dying is the last thing I want to be thinking about, period.

u can succeed or fail without it having anything to do with changing the world. people do it all the time.

but not anytime soon. as long as "eventually" wont be my problem for a few decades or so I'm pretty fine with that. why should I worry about all that now?

Because it'll be coming soon enough. Plus, you THINK it won't be your problem for a few decades, but really, you very well MIGHT die tomorrow.

No, what I've GOT is a realistic outlook. People die. ALL the bloody time. Disease or accident or malice or war or just old age, everyone dies, and a lot of the time it's not when they're old. You can die from tripping and falling and smashing your face on the sidewalk, can't you. It happened to someone down the street from me once, he was pissed and broke his face open and died. It HAPPENS. So what's the point of running and hiding from it? It's FAR better to live well, NOT afraid, take risks, LAUGH at the possibility of death, and do EXACTLY what you want to do.

first of all this isnt the "real world," all that matters even less here. people say we come back even if we do die and whatever happens its not like what goes on here matters in the long run anyway

so yeah, I WILL do exactly what I want to do because what else are we supposed to do? and that happens to involve not getting invested in some complicated future

You ARE aware that there are BILLIONS OF BLOODY PEOPLE ON THIS PLANET for whom this IS their real life, right?

I mean for ME. all of US. we're not gonna be here forever and we might as well accept it

Yeah? Well, if that's true - and I think that's a really short-sighted way of thinking, since you can't be completely sure - I'd say the best way to accept it is by learning to be EFFECTIVE with our time. That means making life better for the people who will be here forever, and who can die.
