one; video reruns

[ strolling down streets as she talks, occasionally glancing around in interest, bright and cheerful. it's a sunny day, everything looks bright. ]

Not that I'm not flattered, and I mean, the job is great and all that. It's nice to know I have a way to support myself. But I think they got the wrong Gothamite. I can do computers, but I'm not really the hero type.

I'd say about how I was in the middle of stuff but that doesn't seem to be an actual concern to them.

Which is actually a little unsettling in people who want me to hero it up for them. And I've got to say, handing out powers to people you don't really know all that well yet and who just got sort of kidnapped? Not actually seeming like a bright idea from over here.

It's probably a long shot, but anyone know Terry McGinnis? [ just in case! you never know. ] Or know anything more than they've told us? It'd be nice to get more of the lay of the land.

At all?

Well, shit. Alright, this isn't the first time. I guess introductions are in order then, I used to be your boss, at one point, when you were here before.

Was the Mayor.

It was a good opportunity, and it's more than just the politics. We were helping imports integrate into a world that wasn't quite so kind to us.

[ He paused, before continuing. ] But no, it didn't continue.

Mitchell Hundred, but since I'm not holding office, I think you can call me Mitch.

They actually gave me two jobs, seems like they know me too well. I'm a civil engineer, and the import representative here.

They did, but it seems like they were well aware of my track record from back in the City, too.

At least that's something.

[ A pause. ]

It is weird. I've thought about that, but... however they got their information, I'm not sure. It's something to worry about, but I'm grateful that at least that means they're not going to give me some shit job I'm not really well-suited for.

I understand the concern, but... I don't think they're necessarily spying on us. Not really. If they were, why wouldn't they just be, I don't know, forcing us to do what they wanted? There are people here who are dangerous, why wouldn't they be putting them in jail as soon as they got here? They have their citizens to think about after all.

I mean, they have some things, but it's not like they have our whole history on file.

[ God, he hopes not. ]

And in my experience, while there's always the pursuit of power, nobody goes into this field unless they want to do something with the world, and most of them want to make the world a better place.

I mean, shit, this isn't like it's a fucking dictatorship, it's a democracy.

Believe me, the shit we go through? You don't do that unless you actually do have some sort of shred of desire to help people. There's more money and more power in other avenues, if you go for that.

New York City, actually.

[ And he pauses, tempted to let that slide. ] People with money are good at a lot of things, but they're going to manipulate other people to do what they want. Politics is a huge paycut.

And if someone's being bought? Well, they can be convinced to do the right thing, too. They have a conscience, they just forgot about it.

Not necessarily. There are reasons why people allow themselves to be bought. Financial, a need, or even because they don't think they'll be caught.

Nobody really does something like that just because they can -- well, most people don't. They aren't villains cackling over their bottle of scotch while they talk about how evil they are to their constituents.

Small things, little dips in morality occur because they can get away with it. We just have to make sure they can't.

Can you guarantee that nobody won't fall?

You can't trust someone before or after, honestly. The only difference with after is that you know what to watch for.

Well, if you're going to expect the worst of people, you may as well start off suspicious of everyone, right?
