[The video feed pops on, showing Kaneda on his bed with...what looks to be the remains of something electronic. Something...pretty familiar. So familiar that it may match what you're holding in your hand to watch this said video. Wires are spilling out of it, some not even attached anymore, and the casing looks like it got bent like a spoon.]

So.

Anyone know how to fix a busted comm?

[A hand reaches up to rub the back of his neck as the other gingerly picks up the device between two fingers, wires dangling.]

I'd say technical difficulties is understating a biiiit~ but I guess it depends on your point of view.

[He tilts his head, watching Isaac work.]

The notes? [Isaac nodded, distracted by his own notes he was making.] Yeah, sure. I'll get 'em back to you.

[Don't mind if he takes a moment to peek over Isaac's shoulder.]

[Isaac shook his head at the question.]

[Not many adults say that to Kaneda, so there's a slight squint...before nodding.

Not that he doesn't consider HIMSELF trustworthy, it's just not usually what comes out of most people's mouths. He always kept his word once he gave it.]

So...you work here?

[Isaac doesn't mind. Sometimes it gets kind of lonely around the shop.]

Yeah, I do. I fix ships for a living.

[At that, Isaac chuckles.]

Back home, I was a systems engineer on a starship. That meant that whatever broke, it was my job to fix it. Whatever broke.

[Tons of people had been there, but never once had he thought to ask.]

Well...I was part of a crew of several hundred. Most big cruisers are like small cities, but...it's peaceful.

Guess that's what Americans do with their free time now...go to space.

[It certainly was the general consensus among the spacefaring folks he met here. Japan never made it that far in his world. A giant space station/laser, sure, but not TRAVELING.]

And you LIVE there?

Well, yeah. I haven't been back to Earth for...at least fifteen years.

[A pause.]

And...do you mean the United States of America? That country hasn't been around for at least two hundred years.

[He sits bolt upright, eyes widened as far as they can go.]

What happened to it? It finally blow itself up?

Uh...no. [He shook his head.] Not...exactly. We started running out of resources. Eventually, nations decided to pool recourses instead of killing each other over what was left.

Wait...you all just left?!

...no. Most of the old nations are all part of Earth Government now.

It's just...'Earth' Government? So they became one thing...

For the most part, yeah. [He nods.] Russia's still around.

[A pause.]

[The edge in his voice is gone, now replaced with curiosity. Soft curiosity.]

Japan...? [He pauses.] Oh...wait. Are you from Japan?

[Man, I really don't want to tell this kid that the sea levels rose and swallowed Japan a long time ago...]

[He blinks, leaning up in his chair.]

Yeah.

It's not part of that, is it?

[He shakes his head.]

...no. A...lot of natural disasters and...global warming lead to the seas rising.
