[Behind him is Kaneda. Holding the other end of the tree, covered liberally in pine needles and bits of pinecones and other dead leaves. He looks like he's having a bad time.]

So. I heard you're supposed to bring trees inside for this holiday crap.

[He shakes the tree in his hand. Unfortunately for Kaneda. Who gets jerked to one side, swearing liberally at Bull.]

What, the gifts thing? Yeah. It's, like, the thing in December. Everyone spends the whole month trying to think of the perfect gift, when all you really gotta do is make sure you're, you know, doing the important stuff. Spending time with family and friends. Love and peace and blah, blah, blah.

The present doesn't have to be some big thing, but something that at least shows that you've been thinkin' about 'em, you know?

The pine scent is supposed to deter them, but that's just a first level of defense. You decorate it with lights and ornaments and stuff, the shinier the better. Distracts them. Keeps 'em from fucking with the presents beneath the tree.
