[ Sitting before the screen is Kitty Jones...or, well. A girl who looks like Kitty. A girl who sort of looks like Kitty. Because whereas Kitty Jones tends to be cute, this girl is flawlessly, sleekly elegant - fiercely beautiful in a way that only very expensive haircuts and very expensive cosmetics can accomplish. Her bearing is different - unsmiling, haughty, eyeing the camera with contempt - and her accent, too, is altered - posh, educated, a little drawling. She speaks in a low and authoritative voice, beginning straightaway with no hesitation. ]

Since quite a few people are having a bit of trouble with this, I'd like to first introduce myself, so that no one calls me anything silly. My name is Medea LeFay. I'm a Junior Undersecretary with the Ministry for Internal Affairs. Some of you may think I have some other name, but I have reason to believe that the creature that resembles me was actually a demon taking my face in an attempt to slander and discredit me.

[ She...actually has reason to believe that the creature was in fact some other version of her, but, well...best to try to spread a bit of misinformation, to reduce the possibility that anyone will try to use the name Kitty Jones to cast harmful magic on her. ]

Second - [ She tosses her head, flipping her perfect glossy hair over her shoulder. ] I have been made to understand through my research and investigations that events such as those which have befallen us, with memory-alterations or dimensional displacement, are often followed by an attack by some foreign power or dissident group. My home is adequately warded, and as a magician of the first order I am thoroughly prepared and able to defend it. If an attack comes, any who find themselves in need of sanctuary may find refuge with me.

[ And doesn't that seem like an attractive offer? Because this girl seems like someone who would be so fun to spend time with. So fun. ]

And third...I have heard speculation that these changes have been brought about by magical means. As I stated, I am a magician myself, and have no knowledge of any spells that can cause confusion of this sort. What evidence do we have that magic is at its root? Any who have knowledge of this, speak; I charge you.

[ Then a beat. ]

And fourth...My home seems to be infested with these - small creatures. Crab-like, but with colorful shells. They seem to be pets. What are they, and how does one care for them?

[ what a nice-seeming young lady this is. ]

[ She nibbles a little on her lower lip, a little sign of nerves - and then scowls when she realizes what she's doing. Makes a great show of tossing her head. ]

I do not wish a stranger to have access to my home. So it seems that caring for these creatures myself is an inevitability.

If you're sure. You know, um... Medea, I never did introduce myself. I'm Jaime. Are you doing okay? Crabs aside, I mean.

[ Very, very much no. ]

Well, I'm absolutely furious. But aside from that, of course I am.

It's easy being angry, your first day here. But it's also pretty easy to get confused, or -- a little scared.

[Not that she'd cop to either of those, would she?]

I guess all I'm saying is, if there's anything I can do to make it easier on you, I can. Even if it's helping you work out some of this tech.

[Just like the first time they'd met, right?]

[ She bites her lip a moment, then says: ]

I'd like to know how to...look back at old conversations. To see what the girl who looked like me - to see what she said.

...yeah. Yeah, I can teach you how to do that. Do you mind if I ask you why, though? You won't like what you see. You already seem to know that.

Because I want to know just how many lies she's told.

Why are you so sure they were lies?

It's clear enough from what I've seen so far. The girl is a killer and a criminal. And she's working against the government.

D'you think everyone who breaks the law is a liar?

I think everyone who acts in secret against the government and sets bombs in buildings with innocent people inside and murders suspected collaborators is a liar.

Okay, uh. I mean, you're not...

[He needs to back up a little. He rubs his forehead.]

Number one, people can change. It's super important to her not to hurt any innocents while she's doing -- what she does. And don't you think that before you judge someone, you need to consider why they do what they do?

Look at how many people are talking to you. You don't get this many friends by just being some sort of psychopath.

I'm fairly certain, actually, that it's quite a lot easier to get friends when you've manipulated them into it.

That could work, if I didn't already know all this stuff about her that you've been saying. If I hadn't already seen her at her lowest, and her at mine. There's only so much you can fake.

Is that so. And how did you earn her trust, exactly? Did you help her in some wickedness?

She's more open about what she's done in her life than you're giving her credit for, you know. How else would you have found out about it?
