This is, of course, one Kitty Jones, living up to her name. ]

Hullo, all. Happy - slightly belated - Earth Day. I hadn't known about that holiday last year, so I didn't do a thing for it, but it's really a lovely thing, isn't it? So, a day, late, I'm doing a little charity drive, and I need all of you to participate. Proceeds going to the protection of the leaf-scaled sea snake, because no one ever bloody donates money to help species that aren't cute.

[ The leaf-scaled sea snake is also quite venomous. Y'know. Whatever. ]

So what this consists of is this. I want you to volunteer here, in this post, to answer questions from fans on rumblr. Give me a list of topics you're not willing to talk about, as well as how many questions you're willing to answer. Then your rumblr fans - or enemies, I suppose, maybe some of them will want to trap you in a lie or something - will bid on the opportunity to ask you questions. Whichever fan puts in the highest bid gets the right to ask the first question, then the second-highest bid gets second question, all down until you don't want to answer any more stupid questions. And then all the proceeds go to the sea snakes.

So who's in? Talk about yourself, help the environment. What's not to like?

[ That's all said very, very cheerfully. Then, in a flippant post-script, she adds: ]

Oh, yeah, I'm not dead, by the way.

[ Which is so nice! so kind! such a good way to announce that! a month and a half after she already came back from the dead! nice. ]

That's simple. It's useful if it's vital to an ecosystem you want to cultivate or if there's something about it you can use as a resource.

All right. So how can you tell what's vital to an ecosystem? And how can you tell what can be used as a resource?

[oceanthief]

If they've been dying that quickly and nothing else has been degrading around them, they're replaceable. For resources all you need is to have someone whose job it is to analyze that kind of thing look them over.

[rathercommon]

[ hhhHHH. Her frustration manifests in a ripple of magic; she turns into a hummingbird. ]

But it's often hard to see what something is good for. You're limited by that person's imagination, aren't you.

[oceanthief]

That's why you send a team that understands your goals.

[Lapis blinks, but otherwise doesn't react to the sudden shift in scenery. you'd think she'd have a better handle on that shifting, but the gem has learned not to hold humans up to the standards of her own species.]

That won't help, though. Not with a lack of imagination. That's a separate issue.

If they're wrong, they don't get a second chance. No one is going to report something is useless unless they're absolutely sure.

Er - this is starting to sound rather...unhypothetical. Are there people sent to assess that sort of thing where you're from?

[oceanthief]

[honestly she wasn't aware this wasn't a hypothetical. Lapis doesn't do that great with abstract concepts.]

Of course. You have to scout a planet before deciding if it's worth colonizing.

Is that what you do, then? Colonize planets?

[oceanthief]

I don't do anything anymore.

Well, that's hardly true. You talk to people, for a start.

[oh Kitty if only you knew the internal struggles that are still plaguing her on that one. five thousand plus years of complete isolation really do a number on your social skills.]

That doesn't matter.

[ With a small laugh: ]

Excuse you, rude! I happen to be enjoying this conversation quite a lot, you know, so it matters to me.

[oceanthief]

That's fine. [a little shrug.] But that's just you.

[which gives the incorrect implication that Lapis isn't particularly enjoying herself, something that is apparently beyond her meager conversational grasp. oh well, at least it shows on her...well, no, it doesn't particularly show on her face. it's probably fine anyway.]

[ A huff. ]

Alright.

[she's not really seeing the problem with it. are humans as squishy emotionally as they were physically? maybe.]

...No, that's not what you're supposed to say.

No. It's more - Well. Like, I said you were being rude. Do you think you weren't being rude?

I wouldn't really know either way.

[humans seem to gauge things much differently than gems, after all.]

Well, it's not about knowing, is it. What do you feel like? What do you think? Were you being all right?

[oceanthief]

[she shrugs again.]

I don't really feel anything about it. I was just stating facts.

So you haven't got any opinion at all? If someone tells you you're wrong, you accept it, and if they tell you you're right, you accept it?

[oceanthief]

Why does it matter what anyone else thinks? I know what I believe in.
