This is, of course, one Kitty Jones, living up to her name. ]

Hullo, all. Happy - slightly belated - Earth Day. I hadn't known about that holiday last year, so I didn't do a thing for it, but it's really a lovely thing, isn't it? So, a day, late, I'm doing a little charity drive, and I need all of you to participate. Proceeds going to the protection of the leaf-scaled sea snake, because no one ever bloody donates money to help species that aren't cute.

[ The leaf-scaled sea snake is also quite venomous. Y'know. Whatever. ]

So what this consists of is this. I want you to volunteer here, in this post, to answer questions from fans on rumblr. Give me a list of topics you're not willing to talk about, as well as how many questions you're willing to answer. Then your rumblr fans - or enemies, I suppose, maybe some of them will want to trap you in a lie or something - will bid on the opportunity to ask you questions. Whichever fan puts in the highest bid gets the right to ask the first question, then the second-highest bid gets second question, all down until you don't want to answer any more stupid questions. And then all the proceeds go to the sea snakes.

So who's in? Talk about yourself, help the environment. What's not to like?

[ That's all said very, very cheerfully. Then, in a flippant post-script, she adds: ]

Well...Where does the Gift come from? Do you know?

Their energy, mostly. They can drain their own life-force if their Gift runs out, but by all accounts that's a bad plan.

As for where humans got magic, that's more for priests and mage students, sorry.

Sorry, I went for knighthood, not university. And I'm not Gifted, so I didn't need to take any theory or application.

No, it's all right. I suppose that's just to be expected. I only figured out magic in my world by devoting myself to it.

It's...you know, something that is everywhere back home. I'd hardly think of it except there isn't any here.

It's like the water pipes. All the homes have them and everyone takes them for granted and not having them would be terrible, but I doubt I could get a straight answer on how they work.

Because you ask if magic can do something and it either can or can't and how it works is the mages' business.

Both? Neither? Depends on the power of the mage sometimes. If you're going to a hedge-witch to get your cold cured, all you care about is that it works.

If it's a black robe turning another mage into a tree, generally you wouldn't want to know.

Oh, they're...very highly educated and powerful graduates from the Carthaki university.

I'd want to know. What if they were turning them into a tree unjustly?

If it helps, generally using such powers leaves the mage bedridden for days after. Not to be used lightly.

That doesn't help a bit. I've seen mages exhaust themselves casting spells that are completely for the wrong reasons. They'll still do evil - it'll just take them a bit longer, and they won't approach it as lightly.

The only black robe I ever met was Master Numair Salmalin, and he's alright. There aren't very many at his level, thank Mithros.
