Throw yourself off a boat near a spot that's rumored to have a lot of sharks.
It goes on and on.
It's a golf ball, it's a much safer bet than a lot of other things you could do to test out your fancy danger sense.

There's no reason to think his powers don't work. Everyone else's do.

Not everyone's powers work the same, though. I found it beneficial to figure out mine in a controlled environment rather than just ignore it and hope it kicked in if I ever needed it. If he doesn't know how his little danger tingle feels before it kicks in during an actually dangerous situation, it could do more harm than good.
