I have been watching.

[The speaker's voice has been manipulated to sound both artificial and faintly hollow.]

There are sinners in your midst. [You know their names, don't you? Perhaps some of them even spring to mind: Lucifer, The Manipulator, Annie Leonhart, Reiner Braun, Bertholdt Hoover...and so on. It's possible you even sympathize with some of them, though it's clear the speaker does not.] You answer their crimes with rewards of friendship, forgiveness...and freedom.

Foolishness.

[What follows is clearly exasperated, but spoken in such quiet tones that it forces listeners to be all the more attentive.]

As expected, heroes...your idea of justice...is weak.

But that is why I have come.

[The speaker pauses, perhaps for dramatic effect, for when he begins again there is a certain zealousness to his tone.]

My name...is Lunatic.

[Do not mistake him for a hero.]

I will strike down the evil that has arisen. For the wicked ones...there will be no escape. The time for them to atone for their atrocities is now.

They will hear the voice of Thanatos.

[Those listening closely may hear the crackling and hissing of flames in the background...it grows louder and louder before the communication is suddenly cut and the line goes dead.]

Intelligence has no bearing on moral culpability or lack thereof. What justice is it, sir, to abuse a young person for his idealism? Even if Yagami were utterly wrong, to threaten his life so would be cruelty of the highest order.

But on me your breath is wasted. The one you should be begging is Light Yagami.

Begging him for what, exactly? To cease feeling mercy and compassion? To show less courage? The latter, he cannot be rid of; you've spoken with him long enough to sense the courage coming from him in waves. As for the former...Can you truly despise such things? Even the harshest enforcer of justice must admire kindness - because, no matter your methods, it is a kind world that you fight for, is it not?

No, not to cease feeling those things, but to cease the foolish idea that standing in my way will lead to anything besides his ruin.

Speak with him about his decisions, for they are his to make, not mine.

But the decisions that you make are also yours, sir. You can make the decision to stay your hand if you come up against him in battle.
