So, this is gonna sound kinda random, but. I've been wondering for a little while...what's New York like here? I just wanna know if it's anything like the New York from my world.

Actually, now that I think about it--how does the New York here compare to New York where you came from? If you've ever been there, I mean. 'Cause now I'm wondering about all the different versions of it we probably know.

What was your New York like? I grew up with superheroes outside all the time, but people here are usually ... surprised by that.

I did too! Most of the superheroes on my world actually started there. Same for most supervillains. And they all, uh, 'worked' there too.

All the fighting made it pretty messy after a while.

Yeah, but thank everything for professional clean up crews.

Though I don't envy those guys. Not one bit.

My dad says they have a lot of job security though.

[He doesn't quite understand what it means, but he says it like it's the only good thing about all the collateral damage.]

... Well, assuming that the bad guys don't go after the clean up crew first.

Come to think of it, I hope that never happens.

Most villains are thankfully very ... shortsighted.

I guess that's true. They always go for stuff like robbing banks and beating up cops and flooding the city--really direct stuff.

They know that there are drains, right? Lots of them?

No, uh, I'm talking like 40 floors' worth of flooding. At once.

That happened in New York where I'm from. It was like two or three years ago but parts of the city are still totalled.

So I don't think shortsightedness matters, so long as you just do something big enough.

I've seen a lot of really terrible stuff at home, but nothing like that. [Not only can Kate imagine the body count, but she knows how little most heroes would be able to do something about it.]

I'm really sorry. I know you just listed it offhandedly, but I am.

[He shrugs a little. There isn't anything he can do about it now and thankfully his life wasn't upended by it. But he knows he was one of the lucky ones.]

It was a while ago, and I can't really do anything about it now. Or could have done anything about it back then either.

Downside to superhero New York: mild desensitization to these things.

That's what my dad always said about it too. He...really didn't like having all the superheroes and mutants all over the city.

[He shifts uncomfortably a little.]

Oh! I am a superhero myself, so it's more the fact that sometimes I can get cavalier about ... not great things.

Wait, really? What kind of superhero stuff do you do?

Oh, back home I run the Young Avengers, and have a version of the team running here. I work with Clint Barton otherwise as Hawkeye.

It's kind of a big deal.

Whoa, Hawkeye? The Young Avengers? Is that like a team of kid heroes?

That's what we started out as, but we're all mostly in the rage of eighteen to early twenties these days. It's been a few years.

Isn't that like normal Avenger age? Shouldn't you just be Avengers now?

Maybe the original Avengers get renamed Old Avengers, or something.

We kind of stubbornly keep our own team going, and none of us are good with new names.

Trust me on that one.
