If you're the cause of someone's death, can you ever be forgiven?

[Asking for a friend. Right. Also "causing someone's death" obviously means murder.]

I'm not sure it's possible. Maybe that's the way it should be. There has be some justice in the universe.

Whose forgiveness would you seek? The dead stay dead. What has been done cannot be undone.

What more do you think can be asked of the dead once they have given up their lives? What would forgiveness even look like?

Though not sure the word forgiveness is the one I'd use.

I can't make it right. All I would seek is an understanding. I want them to know why it happened and that I will be punished.

I've never asked for forgiveness for myself, I never felt as if I needed it.

I like to think it's more the latter than the former. But forgiveness is up to the victim; not the murderer.

"The universe" isn't responsible for forgiveness. That's something you have to work out for yourself. If the person you harmed is here, it's up to them.

I've hurt too many to count; some of them I call family.

But the ones I murdered, well, as far as I know, only one of them is here. I don't want his forgiveness.

But, an answer like that, a question like that, it's all circumstantial, isn't it? It matters who died, and how, and why. Who was left behind. Who was left to grieve.

What I did was...the worst. I don't deserve forgiveness. What I seek, instead, is giving them peace. It isn't fair if they are suffering because I was weak.

I think that question is more loaded then you likely intended.

The question likely should be more of should you be forgiven. You can't bring them back and the pain will always be there.

I think it has to be possible. Justice isn't a lack of forgiveness. I think...if you have made changes to move on from who you were, you can earn forgiveness.

I'm not sure how to move on. Should I be who I was before I changed for the worst? Or should I be someone else?
