In light of recent events it seems apt that I make an advertisement offering my services to the general public. I am Sherlock Holmes, consulting detective, amply acquainted with the solution of murders, thefts, arsons, and the generally unsavoury, etc. Inquiries of a general nature may be directed to me at any time, though I take cases at my own discretion, and will generally request an interview to establish both the particulars and the legitimacy of the case. The suspicious may refer to Dr. John Watson for a no-doubt superfluously effusive list of my general accomplishments, and when he proves unconvincing I should be delighted to provide a demonstration of my capabilities. In what will no doubt be vastly more appealing than any of the previous to some of you, I shall add that all services will be rendered entirely gratis.

I solve cases otherwise deemed unsolvable, whether by the official police or by the clients who being their problems to me directly. Both are most often wrong. More importantly, I did provide a reference. I really prefer not to tell my own stories and John seems to relish doing so at every opportunity and he's mostly accurate. Isn't difficult to work out that contacting him would be a better arrangement than the current one, unless you're opting to skip the résumé.

Well, he's written blogs on the varying tensile strengths of different natural fibres and two hundred and forty different types of tobacco ash. Because you know, that's stuff everybody needs to know about.

Seriously though, he managed to crack a case that the Bow Street Runners couldn't even solve and that was from ages ago. The Aluminium Crutch case is probably his best known accomplishment.

Here I write a modest and generally quiet advice column, which pays the bills and leaves me free to pursue my other interests.

[It's a romantic advice column. For obvious reasons, he's not inclined to specify.]

Therefore the advertisement. A consulting detective is a detective who consults. It's not entirely a difficult concept but to elaborate, as I suppose that does leave rather a lot of room for interpretation, when there are cases the police can't or won't solve, they come to me -- or they did; bad for business, this forced relocation. I also take private clients, when the problems they bring me are sufficiently interesting.

If the hardworking detectives are competent, there won't be any need for me. Time will tell. If it cheers you any, I'm interested in problems, not making arrests, accruing income, or even taking credit if the client should find that idea unpalatable.

[There's a pause, and when he speaks again, a smile is audible in his voice.]

These things do rather have a way of coming to light, though, regardless of my preferences on the matter.

Does your partner support you entirely? That is--is he content with your taking cases entirely unpaid? I'm not certain that mine would be so charitable.

[Who looks flattered? Not... Sherlock. He's not wearing the hat, either. Everyone's dreams: crushed.]

I support me entirely through other, less engaging means. Occasionally he brings me coffee and tells me I'm brilliant; that's enough to be getting on with. Even more occasionally a client will be sufficiently grateful as to gift me with something expensive but useless I can pawn off later to help pay the rent. It also helps to have either a very forgiving landlady or to stay in the local government's good graces, whichever is most applicable.

Yeah, money doesn't interest him in the slightest and I've given up trying to convince him otherwise. Sometimes people will pay him or gift him stuff that he'll never use, but it's all about the work for him.

Mysterious is a relative term; there are crimes, which is enough to be getting on with for now. You're right in that the local police are out of their depth, which to their credit is generally true of the police in my experience and not indicative of any unusual incompetence. ImPorts complicate things.

I take cases from the police or from private clients otherwise deemed unsolvable or sufficiently imperative as to require my assistance. Easily enough guessed but you asked all the same, by which I could conclude you're disinclined to engage in mental exercise but which more likely indicates curiosity, a desire to pin down the particulars, which combined with the fact that you've opted not to avail yourself of my character reference implies investment. Curiosity is investment, even if entertained for its own sake, but hardly anyone praises the generosity of someone from whom they have no intention of benefiting personally. Benefit is of course a relative assessment, open to interpretation; perhaps you're interested in knowledge for its own sake. I'll attribute you more intelligence than that. Perhaps you're interested in hiring me. Perhaps you're more interested in avoiding me. Can't conclude without data, but we've only just begun talking and I can already reason that far.

I solve problems other people are unable to solve. I don't work for the police because I prefer to be selective with my cases, but I work with the police when they see fit to bring their troubles to me. I also take private clients when they find themselves with a problem they can't or won't bring to the police, providing the problem is sufficiently interesting. Consulting detective.

[Now Conan had reluctantly accepted many things since getting pulled into this whole thing. He'd accepted that he had somehow been granted superpowers through some method he didn't understand yet. He'd accepted that he was living among other people who had also been granted superpowers, many of which functioned in completely illogical and unexplainable ways. That many of the same people believed that they came from other worlds that had very little in common with his own.

He had not accepted that any of this was unexplainable. Only that there were puzzles here that he could not explain. Yet.

Now, though, he huffs in disbelieving amusement, in something not quite on the level of offense, but perhaps offended sensibilities.]

Why on Earth would anyone choose to name themselves Sherlock?
