It can be scary. We don't always know what we're supposed to be fighting, and in the end this is a real war situation. Not everyone's strong, and not everyone has powers that help them fight necessarily.[Even if you're really strong if you fall off a building wrong you can die from the injuries. But he keeps that out.]
If you want to, there are people who'll help you get stronger. But if you don't, you don't necessarily have to fight.

In summary, the concept of 'strength' is a pretty ambiguous one, and imPort powers don't easily fit within the concept of understood physics!
I can actually jump rather far in my original form, although amassing any significant height is better achieved through the use of my sticky tethers!
To your original question though, I don't really understand the concept of heroism??? My core programming is to fight crime and preserve order, and I haven't been given reason to question that programming so far! Helping people is fun, and they really appreciate it!
I suppose I can understand how humans and similarly mortal beings have a fear of death, but then imPorts do have a methodology to be brought back to life by the government, yeah???
