WILL YOU HELP SAVE THE WORLD?

Mask or Menace is a panfandom urban 'superhero' genre DWRP game, where heroes, villains, and everyone in between seek to survive and thrive in a world loosely parallel to our own.

I'm not the first person to wonder who sent these mystery texts. But I'd like to pose a new question: why? And why, specifically, were they sent in this format?

It's not a secure way to communicate a secret. It's become quickly apparent that there are several different codes and you need all of them to solve the message, which means working together, which means making a lot of noise. While it's possible that non-imPorts would miss the network chatter, the fact remains that far too many people know to keep this anything resembling a secret, even if there had been any indication that the sender wanted that.

So are they trying just to communicate with us? Why use the cipher at all then? It certainly would have been easier to read if they just sent us a clear message. Is this all just a game? And that's not getting into how unsettling it is that this individual has access to everyone's contact information.

Keep your eyes open. I may not know the ulterior motives behind this move, but I guarantee it exists.

I don't have answers yet. Just more questions. Be careful, everyone.

[Shaun is not usually one to post things anonymously. He's always been a blogger. He's used to life in the public eye back home. But this... Well. This discussion isn't one he's quite ready to have openly. Not with Georgia around. Not with Becks also here.]

So none of us asked to be dragged to this place, right? But now that we're here, I can't be the only person who doesn't want to leave.

I know that could change. It could change fast.

How do you handle it? Living a life that could get ripped away at any minute?

I know that's always true. I know it real fucking well. But it's even more true and immediate here somehow. So how do you deal with that besides super heavy denial?

[And denial only works so well when there's a quiet voice at the back of your mind, one that hasn't been given a chance to put down deep roots or find its volume, but one that is there and waiting to whisper the worst sort of warnings and worst case scenarios.]

Hey, so like - here's a question that's gonna sound like a humblebrag no matter how I phrase it. So, like, I was a teen superhero and I haven't really been able to hold down a job before for like, a lot of reasons, and some of them are obvious. But I have one here and it like, pays really nicely soo....

[ he shrugs awkwardly, trying to think of how to actually phrase what he wants to ask. ]

What do you do with like - money. Like, a lot of money. I mean - not a lot a lot, I'm not like crazy rich but... [ because somehow he never realized how much money doctors make slash no one in the marvel universe is going to hire a mutant with his powerset ] So I'm thinkin' of getting my own place, but I know for a fact there's plenty of responsible adult things that people do with their leftover cash that aren't just letting it hang out in the bank or donating it all to charity.

I just, y'know... Need some help with what they are.

I know it's been a busy few months lately, but does anyone else remember that back in June, the Majority Report just happened to forecast the apocalypse of this world during an interview? Because my memory banks certainly do.

What I don't recall is anyone stepping up to the plate and confirming "Yes, we took care of that, false alarm, everything's fine now". Seeing as how the deadline is looming within -- oh, I don't know, a week or three? -- I'm finding this a gross oversight of keeping imPorts up to date.

So, here's the chance to clear things up. Who wants to share the good news?

[ Please tell him someone actually took care of that whole business. ]

Nikolai himself is rather grouchy, if the scowl is anything to go by.]

Hmph. So I died and I didn't even get any cool loot out of it either! What gives?! I got cool stuff the first time I fought the stupid Mouther thing. And when I fell off a cliff I got Shiko. Dying should have netted me something other than pissy pokemon.

Awww. Whatever. [A wave of his hand as if to dismiss the topic.] Anyone want to make me a shirt that says 'I died and didn't get any loot'? Or 'Dying doesn't give power upgrades'?

[Is he supposed to treat death like this? No? Too bad. No one needs to know it's Actually Affected him. Everything Is Fine. So much so that he signs off with a wide, shit-eating grin.

About half an hour or so later, there's an add on in text, mostly for those that know Archie is his guardian.]

THE MAJORITY REPORT: SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2019
Things continue to go bump in broad daylight.

HITTING PAYDIRT
As seen in news outlets across the porter cities:
Following a period of extended negotiations, unions representing news reporters, photographers, administrative assistants, printers and janitors in De Chima, Maurtia Falls, Heropa and Nonah agreed to new contracts with their publishers. Representatives assure local newshounds that their daily papers will return to regular circulation.

When asked how it could be a coincidence that so many separate groups went on strike at the same time, a union representative just shrugged.

"No idea," he said. "Mercury was probably in retrograde or something."

(DON'T) BURN, BABY, BURN
As seen in coordinated social media and notices issued to the community by porter city police and fire departments:
Citizens are to be advised that unusually high levels of mayhem this summer makes it more important than ever that people look out for each other and be alert to any developing situations. If you see something, say something, to your local policeman or local registered hero. Families should also have crisis plans, and are urged to use the buddy system. Pamphlets on what to do in the event of a supernatural emergency are available at city firehouses.

On a related note, several city fire departments and paramedic services have begun holding new recruitment events and scheduling training classes due to increased need.

BE ALL THAT YOU CAN BE
As seen on international news, emergency broadcast channels, posted online through official Aegis Force Bwitter:

PRESS RELEASE FROM AEGIS FORCE: The ImPort peacekeeping team Aegis Force announces another successful operation against the criminal Otherworld Technologies Organization (OTO). Working in conjunction with the government and other imPort heroes, Aegis agents raided an OTO base outside Nonah and confiscated numerous pieces of dangerous technology created by former imPort inventor Tony Stark, who now appears to have been collaborating with the OTO. This technology was being used to create a large-scale battle mech based on Cybertronian design, which was intended to attack diplomatic summits of world leaders. There were no imPort casualties and numerous OTO members captured.

Aegis Force is also opening membership in the Aegis Reserves. These five imPorts will be called upon to boost Aegis ranks during times of need, such as when regular agents have been Ported out. There are currently TWO slots available for qualified Registered Heroes to join. Anyone interested should contact Agent Darin Altway, who is in charge of Reserve recruitment and training.

Finally, Aegis stresses that its agents are held to the highest standard of integrity and responsibility as they use their powers to serve the public. Agent Archie is currently on administrative leave pending mandatory counseling and retraining after an incident involving the assault of a suspect. Aegis Force does not tolerate this misbehaviour, and expects all members to conduct themselves in a manner worthy of public trust.

Anyone with information or questions for Aegis Force is encouraged to contact the team's hotline.

As heard on heard on pirate radio stations and old headsets that aren’t plugged into anything:
The loud long buzz, and an eight sliced pie. Tasty individually, sure. Very tasty. Pecan, or maybe… maybe pumpkin. But the pie isn’t really a pie when it’s in pieces, is it? Can’t really tell what it was ever meant to be. Tasty but nonsensical. Maybe get the whole pie together first, before you try to eat it? Sharing always makes it tastier, anyway. ... Or stealing.

Maybe all it takes is stealing the other seven pieces, before someone else does.

CODE SWITCH
The Homeland Security Advisory System has moved from THE HOLY GHOST to BASIC BLACK, because it goes with everything.

The Majority Report comes out the 10th and 20th of every month. You may find details and submit here. The cut-off time is 12:01 AM PST on the 9th and the 19th for the corresponding dates.

[Short, and to the point:]

The creature in De Chima is a Gibbering Mouther. I know of it through whispers and horror stories on my own world - I don't know if it's actually from my world or a similar one, but that's what it is.

Those that don't have strong wills are advised to stay as far away from it as possible so that the voices can't take effect. Good news is, it's killable, though it doesn't go down easily. I'd heavily recommend attacking from a distance. Anything explosive and aimed at the body rather than the mouths seems to work best. It also seems to favor bridges, so that gives us an idea of where to find it. And further good news, as far as I can tell, there's only one at a time to contend with.

[Anyone who has ever been in high school or seen one on TV will probably recognize the surroundings Bart is shooting in. The lockers and walls are painted in unappealing colors and the empty state says he's probably sneaking out during class to send this.]

So, I kinda have an important question. Does anyone know the proper procedures for testing out of high school as an imPort? Because I don't know about you, but I definitely can think of better ways to spend eight hours a day listening to lectures on material I already know.

And please, don't go all 'stay in school' TV special on me, because if I can test out, I'll still probably end up taking college classes, I just really need something that's a little more self-paced and a lot less waiting excruciatingly long times for the bells to ring.

[Looking around quickly, he starts to hurry along Generic High School Corridor #1 even as he goes to cut the feed. The hall monitor was coming.]

Tell me about your favorite literary genres? Or your favorite books/stories? I need to do some market research or something.

I've been in a rut with my writing for several months, which is a bummer because I just graduated. So I now probably NEED TO WORK, but I'm a writer who hates everything I try to write right now.

It's very lame.

Alternatively, I'll take suggestions for career paths. Keep in mind that my degree is widely panned as being functionally useless.

[ He's run the math a couple times now. Based on the cheapest recipes he can find, with the best (if limited) range of nutrition with no expensive snacks, and the assumption that he can convince his minimum wage job to give him overtime, he has to work ... sixty hours a week to keep up with his metabolism. Yikes.

So this broadcast shows him prepping meals on a weekend morning, filling old yogurt tubs with a bean fried rice recipe that, well. Frankly it looks kind of gross, but Peter's made it before and it tastes just fine as long as he mixes in the crusty burnt spots with the rest of it. He's still short on calories for the week, though, and while he thinks he's convinced a local place that the spectacle of an imPort eating half the menu will be worth the cost of giving it to him for free, he really needs to figure out something a little more long term. ]

So, um - does anyone have any weird or cool tech they need help with repairing? Like, anything from home you can't get parts for here? The job they gave me here isn't gonna be enough, and I'm pretty good at that kind of thing.

[ Clearly, he's not a cook. ]

Or cheap recipe suggestions, that'd be awesome too.

She looks up again and smiles a little. When she speaks, it's in an Australian accent. )

Right, so, I'm Rikki. I'm not from here ( She pauses and wrinkles her nose a little. ) Erm, from America, I mean, so while I've been told which cities have the Porters, I would be lying if I said I knew where literally any of them are. I've no idea.

So...this seems like the most efficient way to ask. Are there any cities with Porters that have at least semi-easy beach access? I'm really going through withdrawals.

[Bart looks at the camera, trying to decide just how to say what he needs to without rambling on.]

Hi, everyone. I’m Bart, I just got here, and, well, I have a few questions I couldn’t quite pin down during the whole welcome spiel. I mean, nobody answers in the affirmative if you ask them if they’re secretly evil, right? And what kind of government not only pulls people from other worlds into theirs and apparently gives us superpowers and a job and housing and everything,.

I can’t be the only one wondering if this whole thing is really legit, right?

Also, it’d be nice to find some folks from home, too. I’m originally from Keystone City, home of the Flash. Yep, there are heroes where I’m from, too. The big three most people can name are Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, but there are plenty of others.

But really, any suggestions, tips, pointers, places to get really good pizza? I could use any and all of the above. Most especially the pizza. I've tried the stuff at the place they gave me a job, and it's not bad, but, well, there's not bad and then there's amazing, right? Right.

[He pauses, taking a breath, and reviews what he said.]

I don’t really know how people do this, hopefully I’m not sending this into a void. Anyway, I’ll be around, so drop me a line or whatever y’all say here.

[With that, he gives a wave to the camera and the video blinks out a moment later.]

[The camera turns on to boy making pretty much the same face as his icon. He's sitting on a bench in a park in Heropa, and if you're paying attention, you might notice people in the background pointing upwards and taking pictures. Without saying a word, he turns the camera so it's focusing on his hand, which is holding a dog leash that is, confusingly, pointing straight up, and then pans the image up and up until it reaches the other end of the leash: a Husky with very grumpy-looking eyebrows having the absolute time of his life, prancing around in mid-air. While the camera's pointed at him, he leaps at the top of a tree and startles the hell out of a poor squirrel.]

My dog can fly now. That's how my life is going. [This would be so much cooler if his powers weren't on the fritz and he could get his dog to stop chasing birds for like five minutes.]

So I've... well. I seem to have been roped into another job, with neither warning nor explanation, and I'm left with no... ethical way to quit, I suppose. At least, I don't think I'd be able to tolerate the consequences, if I tried.

[ Ruka doesn't post often, and when she does it's usually either about the fucking apocalypse, or some vaguely maudlin waxing about the passage of time. This is definitely not the former, but it doesn't sound much like the latter, either. She trails off and rephrases as she speaks; there's no noise or sign of anything going on in the background, but her voice is airy, distant — easily distracted. ]

It's nothing I have experience with, but we come from all types, don't we. So, do any of you have much experience working with charities? Charitable foundations, maybe. Less, uh, the voluntary fieldwork stuff, more the... resources, and financials. Organization. The gears of the machine. If you will.

[ ... ]

... Thanks in advance.

Stay safe out there.

[Boy, Allura looks pretty tired right now. Look carefully, you'll see she has the faintest traces of bags under her eyes. And those stray flyaway hairs! Look at them, they're popping out all over the place, making her hair look even more cloud-like than usual.]

[Despite the lack of attention to her appearance, the whole setup is a degree more professional than usual, with the princess sitting across a table from the communicator camera, ready to talk. Except, that is, for the fact that words seem to be failing her. But it's not for needing more rehearsal — instead, she picks up a glass of water and takes a drink to clear her throat. When she sets it back down, it slams a little harder on the table than needed, an unintended act of aggravation.]

This is Princess Allura, requesting more information on porting out.

I know that this is a regular occurrence, and often temporary... not in every instance, but often enough.

I also know that that when it is temporary, it's common for the imPort to return a mere 24 hours after their departure. But... how often does it take longer than that? What's the longest it's been known take?

I'm asking because Darin... [She falters on his name for a moment, before firming up her mask of professionalism.] ... Darin Altway was ported out sometime between 24 and 36 hours ago. He's missing, both from our Heropa residence and from the list of imPort contacts on the communicators. While this is far too early to declare him gone for good... it occurred to me I never learned the procedures for this.

When my fellow Paladins left, I... truthfully, I waited until everyone else had come to the consensus that they weren't returning anytime soon, and I accepted it as well. Perhaps it was easier because I already knew when I would see them again. [She means 'easier to accept', but let's face it, it's actually 'easier to not make a big stupid emotional vlog about'.] But this time, I would rather track the situation myself.

If anyone could provide any information or advice, it would be appreciated...

A recent conversation made me aware of the fact that while there is a large community of people here with powers of some sort, that some of us had them already before we arrived here and therefore know how to use them, and that others only got their powers when they arrived here. [Which makes them humans with powers, not mutants, but that's not a distinction he's going to get into right now.]

Which got me to thinking. Perhaps those of us who know how to use our powers could help those who don't learn how. Figure out the specifics, that sort of thing. Or does that happen already?

Soooooooooooooooo. I feel like a lot of times when we post on here it's something serious, or someone left, someone arrived, you get it. And honestly, I've got no problem with that cause it makes sense! But how about some more icebreakers?

FanPort got me thinking cause obviously all the locals are crazy about superheroes, and even non-superheroes, but what about you guys? If you come from a world with superheroes like me, you've got a pretty good head start on everyone else. Still, everyone's probably got some kind of hero, right?

And now I'm sure you're wondering, "Stephanie, who is your favorite superhero?"
