WILL YOU HELP SAVE THE WORLD?

Mask or Menace is a panfandom urban 'superhero' genre DWRP game, where heroes, villains, and everyone in between seek to survive and thrive in a world loosely parallel to our own.

[Normally this is something Genda would never do, but from what he's figured out from just skimming the network the pool of information is a lot more widespread then just one city. That will take too long in regards to one objective.]

The standard syllabus that I've been capable of finding seems overly generic, and hardly tailored for those who did not grow up in this culture. Is this schooling mandatory or are there specialized accelerated programs specifically for those not from here?

[A few moments later, as if added as an after thought.]

Who scored the second point in the Teikoku vs. Raimon elimination match, and what was the final score?

Alright, I need a little help.

[Josuke is quick to the point when he addresses the network today. He may be at home, wrapped comfortably in a fuzzy blue throw blanket patterned with white stars and appearing for all the world like he's refusing to budge from his position on Heropa #004's couch, but he's nevertheless a man on a mission.]

See, I've got this friend...

[Ah, there it is. The reason for this Saturday afternoon interruption.

Josuke's even kind enough to include a picture! One he likely printed off his phone, but at least the face of one Ken Kaneki, blushing and embarrassed for some reason, is visible for all to see!]

...you probably all know him, so you know he's the kinda guy who worries more about other people than he does himself! And with Valentine's Day quickly approaching, it'd be a real shame if someone as smart, kind, and good-looking as Ken spent the day all by himself, right?

Which is where you guys come in!

[As he sits up, Josuke drops the TV remote off his lap and inevitably unmutes the television set in the room which...seems to be playing some kind of telenovela? Sure, why not. At least we know where he got this wild idea from.

After a moment of scrambling to mute that again, because Spanish expletives and jealous screaming is a little distracting, Josuke continues...]

I gotta find Ken a date!

[Because that's what good friends do.]

Or better yet, a bunch of dates! Because you can't find the one if you don't put yourself out there. So, which of you lucky people wants to sign up for an all-expenses-paid evening of fun with one of America's finest?

Come on, don't be shy!

[One December afternoon as carols and the sound of jingle bells belt from every business' speakers, filling people with Christmas cheer (and exhaustion) weeks before the actual event, one imPort posts a text to the network.]

You'd think that with there being four of us ordering at least one of us would get our name right, right?

l o l no

[Attached to the post is a selfie of teens showing off their favorite signature holiday drinks, but the focus of the picture are the names -- confidently scribbled across the cup of each drink are Grant, Kenneth, Utah, and Moore, and anybody who knows these boys will know that those are pretty much the 4kids dub version of their names at best.]

Let's pretend there's a campfire and share some stories about ways your name has been spelled or pronounced since coming here. I'm sure it's happened to a majority of us. (´。` )

((ooc: Any of the boys featured in the post -- Gran, Kidou, Endou, Ken -- may respond to you!! Likewise, feel free to threadjack and hit up anybody and consider it a shitpost free-for-all. HAPPY HOLIDAYS.))

[ hinami didn't go to school today. she couldn't bring herself to. even just waking up was a trial she hadn't wanted to face, even though it was inevitable. ]

I was going to ask what they did in other worlds to  [ mourn ]  honor loved ones, but it wouldn't feel right even if I tried them.

So I was just wondering what everyone else's mother's were like?

My mother was a wonderful woman. She was very kind, and always smiled even when things were hard.

Even though I couldn't go to school, and she hadn't either, she taught me to read and write as much as she could. She'd look at my book every day and say "please do your best!". No matter how many times I messed up a kanji, she never got mad or frustrated.

She made most of my clothes by hand, made them like hers because she knew I liked it. Sometimes she even made them out of her own, even if she still loved wearing them.

...I don't have any pictures of her or a family altar to burn incense and pray for her. So I wanted to remember the good things about her.

The way she held my hand even after people asked if I was too old for it, or made sure I was under the umbrella even if it meant she got rained on. Her and my father always seemed so happy together, even though he was always busy with work.

The days we could all three be together are my favorite. I don't want to ever forget those things, even if they're small.

[ she will still burn incense and pray, of course, but...it won't feel the same. especially not in a world where Ryoko Fueguchi never even existed.

maybe talking about her here is the only way to reaffirm she did at all. to know that someone beyond herself and Kaneki are aware she existed beyond a memory in an alley.

ooc: alternatives to mom's are absolutely fine!]

When Homeworld started investigating this system, we checked all the stars near potential colonies for stability. Everyone was really excited about this planet because its sun had a pretty decent lifespan, so we wouldn't have to do any shielding for a while.

[or. something. Lapis never really paid any particular attention to the reports that came in about earth, because why would she? it was just a little mudball in some podunk galaxy.]

Is that not how it works on this earth? I can't really think of why else you'd be trying to ration sunlight, but...it's kind of stupid. Unless you're storing it somewhere to use later it's not going to make any difference, and I really don't think humans have that kind of technology yet.

[at least not on this version of the planet, anyway. she really has no idea what 'daylight savings time' could mean aside from this, and it's got her completely mystified. that at least is a familiar feeling when it comes to humanity, even if it's not all that pleasant.]

You guys don't even have that much time to start with. Do you really need to complicate it this much?

[and if the sun is dying...why bother squabbling between insubstantial nationstates when there was such a big problem looming over them all? it was all so dumb.]

[The ID on the post reads “Anonymous”, though there aren’t any other signifying markers on the post itself.]

A situation going on as long as this, I have to wonder. How normal is it for someone to be gone for a long period of time and remember everything when they come back?

A lot of us talk about how to deal with watching people leave, but what about coming back to find them gone? What do you do then?

With the holidays coming up, it’s hard not to think about the family back home, or the family here that left. It’s hard not to feel lost.

That is the great thing about this place, isn’t it? A lot of us become close like family so it almost makes up for the loss.

Any family or friends in particular you want to talk about? Sometimes it’s easier to talk with others about things weighing you down.

Or on a lighter note, any plans for the holidays, network?

I know it's a 'holiday' right now, but I have a question.

Does something bad happen if someone doesn't go to school? I've been given to understand that it's obligatory, or necessary in some way, but that's not what I'm asking.

I just want to know, is it my choice or not?

[ The camera turns on, it's Saitama filming Genos using Genos' comm as the cyborg is busy carving pumpkin after a pumpkin. Saitama is impressed enough with his diligence he feels like it should be preserved on the network.

Genos is very focused and hard at work, as he's carving another pumpkin. On the table and floor are more that can be seen, including a moon, and a tree, and a demonic sort of face that seems to be layered (he's been working on that for past few hours). Whatever Genos is working on now, Saitama can't see what it is. ]

"Hey, Genos. What're you planning to do with all these pumpkins, anyway?"

[ Genos finally notices him filming and puts away the tools, but the tiny drill coming out of his finger is still there. ]

"Sensei, why are you recording me?"

"Figured people'd like to see, they go nuts for Halloween, here, right?"

"It does seem like a big deal here." [ Genos agrees, still positioned in a way Saitama can't see his current work ] "I've been practicing some carving techniques, I didn't want to ruin the ultimate design by lack of skill. These--" [he points at the finished carvings] "--are not worthy to be shown."

[ Then he narrows his eyes as he zooms in at the comm in Saitama's hands. ] "For your information, you're not recording this, you're streaming it straight onto the network."

"Well, yeah, that's what I meant to do. I'm showing people how cool you made these pumpkins." [ Genos blinks hearing this reply, as he expected it to be accident, rather than intentional action. Plus, if this was just being recorded, he could easily not post the file. But before he can answer Saitama obliviously continues on:] "So, what's your ultimate design? Eh, ehh? Show the people!"

"Please, give me a few seconds, I'm almost done with it..." [ Genos turns away from the camera, as he starts to quickly add finishing touches to the carving. Then he turns around and presents it with proud, small smile for everyone to see. And compared to the previous one? This one is painfully simple, as it's a very simplified drawing of Saitama's face, in the goofy-smile-egg incarnation ]

"Here it is! And it will look even better, while illuminated! I ensured the change of layers to give your whole face a glorious shine, sensei."

[ Saitama "erks" in surprise, suddenly regretting streaming this. The carving of his face even has holes carved in it for an extra shine on a bald head. He hates his life. After a delayed pause, Saitama remarks in a small, dead tone:] "This still doesn't answer what we're gonna do with all these pumpkins..."

"I think the tradition says you should put it on the porch - which we don't have - or a window." [He'd give the Saitama-pumpkin to Saitama right now, but he's filming so... ] "Others? Throw them away". [ Genos finishes with an uncaring shrug. So cruel to his works...]

Playmaker-san asked a good question about if our powers defined us. It's something I've been thinking about lately.

What if you have a power that goes against even your biology?

If it changes something about you that's always been a requirement?

As a Ghoul, I've always had to eat humans to live. There's no other way, it's how Ghouls are. How our bodies work.

But...the Porter has made it so I can eat human food now.

Before it made me sick. It tasted horrible. But now it's good, it doesn't make me weaker to eat it. If I can eat human food to live now, instead of humans...

Does that change who I am? Does it change what I am?

I have always been a Ghoul. I don't know how to be anything else.

[ 'i don't know if i want to be anything else' goes unsaid, but it's there.

thanks for the existential crisis, kidou. ]

[ The video begins with only Pearl's hair pretzel being visible in the camera's frame before she sets the phone down on a table. Pretzel Head Pearl's demeanor is much different than it was when she first appeared on the network. Rather than a scared and confused foreigner, she now looks like a scared and confused native. Much different.

She also has something shiny and red in her hand, but only part of it is visible from this angle. It looks... not dangerous, per se, but definitely not like something an eight-year-old should have in their hands. ]

Umm... Hello. The other day, I found out that I had been gone for a day, but I'm not sure where I went, and I don't remember leaving... And when I came back, I was suddenly holding this. [ She holds up the obviously love-themed bow with a bashful expression. What she fails to mention is that she was daydreaming of her favorite pretend couple KISSING when it appeared in her hand. Which may be why she also looks so guilty. ]

I-I think I've been a bad girl... This isn't mine, and I don't know who to return it to! [ GUESS who just started bawling on the feed, coming to you live from her bedroom! No really, you'll never guess who!! ] I'm sorry for stealing, and pretending that Mystic Maya and Mr. Nick kissed!

[Endou is never really one to waste time when it comes to his passions. He'd spent the last few days going to the park and generally just kicked a ball around himself. It wasn't the same. It wasn't that he couldn't do it alone, he had done plenty of training by himself back in the old days, before his soccer club really picked up the same passion for soccer he had...and that's really when it hit him. A soccer club. There was only one real thing to do after that epiphany.

So it's loud and enthusiastic voice that peals out over the comms today.]

Hello! My name is Endou Mamorou, and today I'd like to talk with you about soccer! I noticed there was a really nice park, but there aren't a lot of people to play with and practicing by yourself isn't all that much fun...so today I'd like to tell you all about the amazing new soccer club I'm going to be forming! Everyone's welcome to join! Soccer is a great way to meet new people and make new friends, so I'm extending this invitation to everyone!

[There's a small pause and a bit of a weak laugh from the boy.]

I don't exactly have reservations on any fields yet, but I promise it's something I'll have ready by the time everyone's together for our first club meeting...

[Because who can resist the temptation of a soccer club! Honestly? ]

...Also the location of the club hasn't been decided yet either...but if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them! I hope you'll all come join me and share your soccer with me! Feel free to contact me in the meantime, and thank you for your time!

[The audio clips out, ending with an automated text message sent out afterwards that reads "The Captain's proverb today is...You have your own Soccer!"]

Do you believe in God? Gods? Do they exist where you're from? What about angels or demons or anything like that?

Where I'm from the existence of gods is hard to deny. People are pretty devote and religious. Church is an intrinsic part of our culture. It takes someone pretty hardheaded or self-centered to deny the existence of higher powers, but here there's not much emphasis on religion. Guess I'm just kinda curious now. Is it more like my home in your worlds, or more like this one?

Testing, testing, one, two, three... perfect!

[There's a brief pause as Utena tries to start a new post, but instead, her message just follows after her brief test]

Hey everyone. There's a lot of new people here, huh? Anyway, I'm Utena Tenjou, and I just got here last month. I remember that it can be pretty hard getting used to this place, especially if you don't know that many other imPorts. I mean, I don't have anything against the natives here, but... well, there's just some things they don't really understand, you know?

So, I had an idea. Why don't we have a meetup this weekend? You know, for everyone who's still going to school. That way, we can all get to know people who understand what it's like to be an imPort. I hear that there's an aquarium at Nonah that's supposed to be pretty nice, so we can all meet up there Saturday afternoon.

[OOC: This meetup will be the start of the Attack of the Chaos Coven plot! Despite what she says, it's open to non-students as well; Utena's just so used to going to school for so long that she forgot about kids who aren't going to school. Your characters are free to sign up ICly here, but it's not required.]

[ The camera is pointed sky-ward, briefly. The tops of buildings could be seen, as could the vast blue skies with puffs of pure white clouds that dotted it. The chirping of birds, the sounds of a bustling town could be heard as the camera remains idle. Then there's a soft fall of footsteps, followed by the scraping of a chair being dragged against pavement briefly.

The camera shifts, as it's delicately picked up between two fingers. A girl with blonde hair and bright blue eyes appears, and she looks no older than seventeen. The surroundings behind her shows that she was sitting at a local cafe in Heropa. It appears she's having nothing but a casual day, although she finds herself immensely lost in this place.

A small smile appears on her features, and she finally opens her mouth to speak; ]

Greetings, my name is Aigis.

[ There's a brief pause as she attempts to figure out what to say. ]

This is my first day here, so I am obviously new around these parts. I am making this video in attempts to find out more information than what was given to me... And to perhaps connect with others.

Tell me about when you realized you were in love.
And then tell me about when you realized you weren't.

Both of those have an either-or element, too, of course. Don't think you have to have both to join in.

Alternatively, if you don't have either of those... Tell me about your siblings. Or your best friend. Or your worst enemy.

Everybody has these little pieces of personal history, but nobody new you meet will ever know those parts unless you choose to share them. It's like editing your own narrative. A lot of them probably seem innocuous once you have some distance, but I love hearing about things like that. I always wished that I could see the whole of people in an instant, or that I could read them as easily as I could read books.

I can't, though, so I have to ask and hope that people are willing to share bits of themselves with me.

[Hello network, here's a new face--an androgynous looking teenaged girl in what's clearly a work uniform. She's standing in front of the lion exhibit at the Heropa Zoo.]

I probably shouldn't be on here at work, but it's almost closing time so there's practically no one around anymore anyway. It was pretty busy earlier though, since my boss asked me to try bringing this with me today.

[Pidge turns the focus of the feed to the robot lion sitting next to her. It's about the size of a regular lion.]

It...definitely got attention. I don't even remember the last time I had to talk to that many people in one day.

Since I've already been stuck socializing all day, I guess I should finally introduce myself. So, uh, hi. I'm Pidge. You might've seen a few of my friends around. Some of them also have lions like mine. I've been trying to study some of the tech around here, so if anyone wants to talk about stuff they have at home, that'd be pretty cool.

[Oh good, it’s Mabel Pines. This bodes well! What doesn’t bode well is that she’s outside the mess that is Heropa 18, wearing a sweet helmet and with two piles of junk sitting on the front lawn visible in the frame. Piles of junk that might, in a galaxy long ago and far away, be a “pod racer.” Except these definitely have more rockets attached to the sides. Like, an excessive amount of rockets.]

Hey guys! Mabel Pines here-- oh and Dipper! [Who waves distractedly at the camera as he puts the finishing touches on his racer.] We just wanted to remind everybody to save the date. The date being August 31st! ‘Cause it’s our birthday and it’s gonna be a celebonanzapalooza to be remembered. We’ll be celebrating being fourteen-- totally seasoned teenagers!-- in major style. And all of you are invited!

[In the background, the pod racers gently lift off the ground. There's a faint humming noise and a weird glow. This actually looks like it might work?? Dipper gives Mabel a thumbs up and adjusts his helmet, only for one of the racers to make an alarming pinging sound and suddenly list to one side. He smacks something and everything straightens out.]

We really do mean all, even you new people! Every imPort’s a friend of the Pines family, except for that one guy and he knows who he is. Come by, say hi, get cake! Bring presents.

[Dipper nods at Mabel, and the twins snap on some sweet goggles in synch. Several pigs with fire extinguishers in their mouths stand at attention. Mabel makes to turn off the camera before she remembers--]

--and if you’re in Heropa we’re sorry about the noise!

[Mabel gives a jaunty wave and the camera turns off as they hop in their racers. The people of Heropa will get treated to some alarming drag racing noises and some minor explosions in the next few minutes. Everyone else-- hey, you’re invited to a party! If the kids are still alive to host it!]
