WILL YOU HELP SAVE THE WORLD?

Mask or Menace is a panfandom urban 'superhero' genre DWRP game, where heroes, villains, and everyone in between seek to survive and thrive in a world loosely parallel to our own.

[ Rey is still messing with the camera, leaning into it when it cuts in. There’s some shuffling and noise while she gets everything mounted before sits back and gives the camera a grin with a wave. ]

Hi there. I’m Rey, I’ve just recently arrived. It’s a little mad that there’s so many heroes here. Where I come from, there are definitely folks wanting to fight for what is right but having something like powers is... rare. Maybe I should retire and pick up a hobby instead.

[ She glances away from the camera, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear and trying not to reveal a heavier truth hiding beneath what should have been a light comment, given what she’s seen her power is capable of. Her grin is a little less enthusiastic, a little more guarded when she looks back at the camera, trying to force herself to move past it. ]

Anyway-- Looks like I'll be working at the Reclamation Yard, so if you're looking to offload or buy any scrap I guess I'm the girl you'll need to talk to.

[ The feed focuses in on a dark-haired teenager sitting on a chair in the middle of ... well. It's junk? Definitely junk, though it's currently floating in midair, like about six exploded diagrams all intermingled and hanging out at once. ]

Okay. I've already been here like twice, so I don't need the usual stuff about how housing works, and swear-ins, and blah blah whatever blah. Buuuut it's been three years since I was last here, so updates? Updates would be great.

[ He swivels in his chair, reaching out to adjust one of the parts in midair. ]

Anyway. I'm Hiro and I'm a tech genius. Also apparently Stark bailed somewhere in the last three years, so I'm out of work? Which sucks. It's such a pain finding somewhere that will hire a teenager for actual work without it being an "internship" or crap like that.

[ A tiny flying robot drifts over, handing Hiro a can of soda. ]

So I'm changing it up. Freelance only. I can build pretty much anything if you've got the resources for it, buuuut robots and superhero armor are my strong points. Also built a wicked holodeck back home, just saying.

[When the camera turns on, Tina's got it propped up to display various bits of merchandise on the kitchen table; she's currently squinting at a candle.]

Okay, I've seen some ridiculous pieces of merchandise in my time here, but I did a Bletsy dive since everyone seems to be paying extra close attention to us lately, and... how do people come up with this stuff?

[She pulls her phone closer; the candle is labeled "Smells Like Tina Spirit".]

Like this. It's a candle that's supposed to be scented like my favorite things- except how can you really encapsulate "boy smell"? And burger scent on top of that? And why would you want something that smells like butts? I like to look at them, but...

[She trails off, wrinkles her nose, then pokes at a pile of dice.]

And these dice are supposed to be Tina-themed, but they have little clay fish in them. Wouldn't horses or dogs make more sense? [A pause, before she finally gets it.] Oh, uh, unless that was a typo... and I put in Tuna instead of Tina, heh... heh heh...

I won't even go into the tea.

Has anyone else found anything really bizarre?

[ So here's a face that might be familiar to some people. A young Japanese teenager squints at the screen with a practiced ease that indicates he's used this sort of tech before. Because he totally has, even if he's frowning a little bit. ]

Man, couldn't they have given me my old comm? The default loadout sucks...

[ A burst of static as he fiddles with something; the feed cuts out for a second before it returns, this time at a slightly wider angle. He's already spread out a whole array of miscellaneous parts across the floor of his room in Heropa #12. Just. Junk as far as the eye can see. ]

Two questions: is the Lucky Cat Café still standing? And who the heck has my toolbot? They wiped my tracker software. Unbelievable. This is a pain in the--

[ Another moment of static as Hiro takes a minute to search for something. ]

Anyway, I'm Hiro Hamada and I'm amazing. If you need something insane built, I guarantee you I can build it. Reasonable rates. Discounts for anything AWESOME or explosive.

If someone were to discover that they possessed an ability that had the potential to endanger the lives of those around them, what sort of options would they be looking at?

Other than resorting to criminal detainment of course, and where learning control is not an option, as it simply doesn't function in a controllable manner.

So essentially what I'm asking is, is it possible to voluntarily arrange for import abilities to be suppressed? Are there any non-permanent options? What sort of side-effects could one expect from undergoing such a process?

You'll have to forgive the lack of details I'm afraid, as they aren't mine to share.

[He's asking for a friend okay. Yeah when's the last time anyone bought that. Still though, it's true.]

Feel free to list any contacts you may have regarding this issue.

Thank you.

Question!

How do you tell a friend that you like them as more than just as a friend without making everything all weird?

Also! For those of you who have been here for a while, do you feel like you've changed as a person? If you have, do you think it's for the better or the worst?

...That's all! Thanks!

Umm...

[Awkward pause as he thinks about how to ask his question. There's no particular reason this is just a voice post other than the fact that he simply forgot to turn on the camera.]

So the skateboards are kinda cool, but isn't there a store anywhere that sells normal rollerblades? Like the kind with wheels? They keep trying to push these 'hoverblades' on me and I don't even think they work like they say they're supposed to.

[ Finally, finally, here's someone on the network taking credit for this mess. Spoiler alert: it's Hiro. Again. The camera shows him in front of a badly damaged machine, with one arm in a sling (but mostly healed thanks to his brother). He look ... frazzled. To say the least. ]

Okay - okay. I messed up really badly. And I need some help. Trust me, this wasn't what I was trying to do. I think. I can't remember either ...

I really need some help fixing this machine. And - more importantly, I need help keeping Callaghan away from it. He doesn't know where it is yet, but I know he's gonna find out and come after it any time now. And if he breaks it again, none of us are getting back to normal.

liverletdie: (Is the rudest thing you can do)
[personal profile] liverletdie
[ So hello, Imports, many of you have seen some parts of Starktech before, but Tony Stark's office is a little different. There's a moment of discomfort, when the hand pulls back -- actually using the communicator is obviously not natural to Stark, who pulls back after a moment to show he's not alone. It's also Charles Xavier in the shot, but other than a tip of his head, he doesn't acknowledge him at first. ]

There we go. Alright, evening everyone.

If I haven't introduced myself to you personally, that's a shame, and we should change that. I'm Tony Stark. My friend here -- [ A gesture backward ] is Charles Xavier.

But before we get started on why we're here, I want to give a little bit of a history lesson. And excuse my missteps, I'm not a professor by any stretch of the imagination. [ An eyeroll in someone's direction. The someone in question, merely smiled serenely but wasn’t about to take Tony off the hook. Not in this instance. ] I'm better at doing than explaining. Always have been.

But that's just the way things are, and since I'm something of a relic here -- [ A grimace. He recently just had an anniversary. ] -- and since I've been ported away from home for a long while, I want to talk a little bit about what I've seen. You see, this whole thing with Russia? It's a bit like watching an old show remade -- kind of. We're used to being disliked -- whether as Superhumans, mutants, metahumans, or imports, or whatever it is you go by back in your own world. That's just how it is, when people suddenly start manifesting with more power than we know what to do with. It's natural to fear us. I've known people who could destroy the world if they wanted -- I've even seen it come close a time or two. To put it mildly. To go from normalcy to the verge of a disaster movie? It's difficult for the best of us, and not everyone is the best of us.

Back before -- in the City, we spent a long time dealing with this. See, when I first arrived, we weren't easily controlled, or well regulated. We...did things. At one point, Godzilla took over, someone summoned a fleet of demons -- and cthulhu, and then an import defaced the moon. [ It was a dick. The rumors about a dick on the moon were true. ] See, people didn't like that, and they stepped up, and started an organization called Vulcanus. They infiltrated us at one point. Then they started going to other worlds in an effort to stop us. They even used Sea Turtles as guinea pigs to give themselves superpowers. We even went to a world where they took control, and us imports were essentially their property.

I won't lie, it's bad, and we shouldn't be treated like that. By any stretch of the imagination. But everything that's happening, the way Russia kidnapped some of us, and tried to brainwash the rest of us... we've been through it before, and come out the other side. Hell, Lachesis saved us that last time, but we still persevere every time. But I don't know about you, but I'd rather it not be a battle every time. And we need to do more, we need to be better at convincing the world around us that we should be welcome. Which, actually, is why we're talking to you today.

[ Alright. Tony had taken care of the history lesson, so now it was Charles’ turn to pick up the professor baton.

Rolling his chair slightly more into the frame, he nodded towards Stark before turning his attention to the camera feed. ]

‘May you live in interesting times” I believe is a quote that many of us have heard and I have to admit that since arriving here three months ago I feel as if I’ve been living in very interesting times indeed.

[ He offered the words with a smile, before sobering and continuing. ]

One of my first encounters with a local here in this world was a woman who was expressing her concerns over imPorts and some of the destruction that has been caused over time. One of my first experiences was when the city of Heropa was overtaken by a jungle and from there, the situation with the Soviets came to head.

When the Soviets first kidnapped imPorts, I was one of those who traveled to France, to talk with the French about aid. It was an eye opening experience for me, as the French had a number of questions and concerns when it came to imPorts.

[ Lifting a hand, he motioned towards Stark. ]

As Mr. Stark explained from his first hand experience of previous situations, the unknown factor surrounding imPorts, is allowing a fear of our abilities to take root in people's’ minds, particularly when they are getting sensationalist media reports about imPort activities.

So we’ve come up with an idea.

We want to try and adopt a more proactive attitude in reaching out to the international community and offering humanitarian technology and innovations that can come from imPorts. To this end, StarkTech has already committed funds and tech innovations in the fields of medical equipment and infrastructure; such as clean waterways and stable electricity.

I do want to be clear that we are only pursuing humanitarian innovations and technology. Nothing military, even in a defensive capacity. The goal here is to show the world that while we are powerful and/or come from worlds vastly more advanced than this one, our abilities need not be looked upon as merely weapons and feared as such.

[ Don’t know about anyone else but Charles had taken a little exception to the Soviets’ claims that imPorts were little more than weapons for the United States. ]

We’ve only just started to toss these ideas around and our hope is that there may be other imPorts who would like a chance to contribute to this effort? I understand that recent events have given us reason to feel cautious. But as a community, we have such a wide range of experiences, skills and abilities that the chance to offer our assistance on an international level, could afford us the opportunity to help show the locals of this world that they don’t need another Vulcanus.

[ Stark leans forward then, a bit more self-satisfied smile on his face than is strictly necessary, but then again, it’s Tony Stark. ] We want the community’s input, at the very least, but more than that, I’d personally like to see more people involved, no matter what your expertise is in -- there’s a place for everyone. So don’t hesitate to speak up, or ask questions, if there’s something that comes to mind.

[ It was Charles’ turn to nod in agreement with Tony’s words, before he continued. ]

This is an initiative that will work best if it comes from as many of us as are willing to offer time, ideas, and assistance. Large or small, it only needs to help show the international community that they don’t need to believe the Soviets’ insistence, that we are no more than weapons of the United States.

[Around the time the first imPorts started trickling back into the imPort towns after their flight from the Antarctic, the network lights up with a video. There's a murmur of voices in the background, but the obvious focus of the feed is one smiling woman -- Cass. A much more subdued looking man sits drinking coffee what looks like a cafeteria table behind her, and behind both of them is an expansive room that people who actually frequent the place may recognize as the dining hall of the Xavier School for ImPorts.]

Hi guys! [Cass greets, cheerful as ever.] Usually, I'd ramble here and try to preface things, but today I'm just going to get to the point. [thank goodness]

[Stepping back, Cass turns around her camera and starts to take a video of the cafeteria around her, and what she focuses especially on is a group of tables set up like a buffet line. There's food everywhere -- trays filled with several kinds of salads, trays lined up with a bunch of sandwiches, and beyond them, plate after plate of all kinds of food.]

There's also soup cooking in the back, [she declares while turning the camera back to her, and her brightly cheerful grin softens a bit.] Professor Callaghan and I spoke while you were gone to open up Xavier for all of you -- after an ordeal like what we just had, I can only imagine how tiring it'll be to have to cook or buy and wait for food, but food is essential to healing. The doors are open to anybody who wants to come in, so come help yourself, all right? If anybody who's well enough to and want to help can help, I'm welcoming that, too. We've got a stock of blankets here, too.

The food's already ready! We'll be here all day and into tomorrow, so drop by whenever you want to. No need to sign up or pay. Just remember to share.

And... welcome back, everyone. Get some rest.

Everyone who knows me knows I suck at this announcement shit, so just deal with it.

Xavier's school is open to the scientifically-inclined nerds of the imPort world.

Akito's busy trying to figure out how to block LACKEY from accessing our nanites, since that's the only commonality he can figure out between all the kidnapped people. If anyone else is working on the same thing he'd like it if you could contact him since he's having trouble pinpointing the frequency the nanites or LACKEY runs on.

The old geezer is working on... something. Fuck if I paid attention to whatever he said. [ spoiler: he fell asleep ] But he could use some help too before he gives himself a stroke.

The Russian servers are being blocked by that Lackey fucker. I'm not the best hacker around, but I'm not shit at it either. Everything I try fails. [ mutters something super uncomplimentary and crude about lackey's lineage despite lackey being. you know. an ai ] Anyone else have any luck with it yet?

And Xavier's isn't just open to science nerds. If anyone is scared or feels unsafe where they are they can come to the school and stay for a while, since it's being better protected than basic housing.

[ a pause here as he considers how to phrase this-- ]

Anyone in contact with their missing people know if the guards are wearing watches? If they are and they can see the time set on them it might be able to narrow things down to a timezone, especially if multiple guards are wearing watches and the times deviate slightly from each other.

[ private to his loser friends. ]

I'm going to assume you're all safe, since if something happened to the idiot crow the whole country'd have heard of it.

And when the hell were you planning on telling us that Sumeragi was here, huh? What the fuck! When did our world become a fucking interdimensional buffet!? Fucking bullshit! [ shh this doesn't mean he's worried about all of you assholes. really. ]

It's almost X-Mas and you know what that means.
Shitty music.
Shitty sweaters.
And a mad dash to get the best presents for whoever the fuck you buy gifts for.

🎁🎁🎁

If you have a giant fucking nerd and don't know what to get them I am here to save your ass from the guilt of no-gifting or shit-gifting.

I just so happen to be a master of digital combat. These skills come with the great reward of amazing fucking loot. Loot that I don't need because I'm already amazing.

Armour, weapons, magic spells, enchantments, rare crafting items, vanity items, cute pet minions. My crafting skills are also maxed out in [ top 3 games with crafting systems are listed here ] so if you want to go the super-customized route I can craft or mod the shit out of whatever.

So I don't need any of this shit but I do need money because American economy is a bitch.

Base cost is in-game price divided by a multiplier of ten that's the most reasonable for that particular game's economy vs IRL, plus 10% extra if it's custom shit since my time's not free.

TL;DR if there's a game item you want/need to buy for yourself or whoever else I probably have it if it's for the games listed below. Give me a request and if I don't have it I can get it by Christmas.

[ list of about eight major online games because this is what Agito has been doing with his free time for the past six months to satisfy his intuitive aptitude. he may have set himself up an epic multi-system gaming rig. what a loser. ]

[ ... added shortly after, because Akito made him-- ]

And I've never posted on here before so yo, I'm Agito. I hate people. I don't want to be friends. I'm Akito's twin brother/his shittier half. Blah blah blah and whatever else social people say in these things.

He hasn't been gone long enough to age any more than he has living in Heropa, which means that the only tangible change is that he's looking awfully tired... but that could just as easily be because he's facing finals back home. Either way, he's offering the screen a little smile.]

Hey, everyone. I'm back... and it looks like I've missed Thanksgiving too. Which means it's a good time to say thank you. I, um, saw that post that Wally made once I went missing, and you guys said a lot of nice things. So thank you, it meant a lot to me, and I'll have to do my best to live up to all that. I'm thankful for you guys too, y'know?

[Like Wally predicted, he definitely cried. A lot. It was a mess. He coughs into one hand, looking slightly embarrassed for having had to openly confront all those nice things, so he's quick to move on.]

Anyway, does anyone else here think we hafta just stop trying to keep track of our age when we keep getting Ported in and out like that? 'Cause I dunno about you, but I have no idea how old I'm supposed to be anymore. I'm just graduating grade 11 back home, but here, I'm taking college classes.

I think being friends with about forty thousand people warrants a network announcement. If any of you know Jaime Reyes, he's been Ported out.

Pretty smart guy told me that three months is a good amount of time to wait before assuming someone's not coming back with their memories, SO. I had a good idea of what we can do to make this a little happier, which is probably what he'd prefer anyhow. 'Cause he's a hippie.

Anybody interested, share a story about Jaime! Funny, nice, interesting- anything's fine so long as it's not depressing. Or if you don't have a story, maybe something you like about him or you could leave a message of something that you'd like to say to him. Maybe we can show him this if he gets back. Make him cry, so I can get blackmail pictures.

[A heavy pause.] Iiii don't want to make this sound like a eulogy or anything. Especially if he DOES come back, because then I'll look really stupid. But he's not from my world, so. You all know how that goes.

Jaime is...a seriously good guy. He's really a great- He's a great person. So. If you DON'T know that loser, definitely read around to what people have to say. You'll probably want to get to know him when you're done.

I don't get to take enough vacations. [ Thankfully, the camera is focused on his upper half -- you're all spared the dreaded speedo for now. ] You know, being a CEO and everything, it takes a lot of time. Even now? I've got my comm and my work phone on me.

Okay, okay, so it doesn't look like much. This is the new Starkphone, by the say. The one I've been working on...since the company started? I wanted to do something different with it, so... it took a bit. [ But he waves it again. ] It's going on sale...what, next week? Yeah, Wednesday, just in time for Thanksgiving. I'm sure you've seen the little adverts, but anyway, if you're looking for a phone, they're going to blow all the other ones out of the water, but... well -- we have our comms, right?

Now I was going to talk about how nice beaches are in the middle of November, but... you know, I got distracted. [ By talking about his own work. Go figure. ]

I'll leave it at that, I think. To all you new folks who keep coming in, if you want a job, just come talk to me, alright? I've got a heck of a company, and we can always use more.

[ With that, he pulls to the phone, and actually pulls up the display, which isn't just the screen, but instead what looks like a floating-light keyboard.

Oh yeah, it's definitely a floating light keyboard. It's only on an afterthought that he shuts the comm off.
